RickResource Forum Album Vol.2 - Featured Artists
Hey all -
I've started this topic for the bands & musicians featured on RRF 2 to come and post the nitty-gritty 411 on themselves. With just a two-page inner fold to work with, it was barely enough room for me to simply list all the songs & artists and a few additional credits & thank-yous. So if you're on the CD, please indulge us with song lyrics, a who's-who personnel listing of your band, photos of the band, photos of your gear, recording techniques... any piece of crucial info that the rest of the world needs to know about you & your song.
So PLUG AWAY!

Nobody?
Well OK, I'll step up, as in, the newest band opens the show.
First my contact and website: http://[email protected]
http://web.me.com/kiramdear/Galerie_Kir ... layer.html
and some images. My little studio:

and a decent recent image of myself.
Here's a logo
A note about the process and scope of recording my songs:
Both songs were recorded on an iMac G5 running GarageBand software. All production, mixing, instruments and vocals by myself. My studio is in the wheelhouse of my sailboat. These are two songs from a demo album of original music with a classic rock feeling. As of writing I have seven songs completed for the projected album, to be called, "Be Bread". My intention with these recordings is to establish a relationship with a producer who could help me to take my songs into a real studio and do them right with other musicians involved, then to put out a CD and start playing the material out. All the seven songs can be heard at my website, as linked above
Thanks to Marty Step, Doug Adamz, JD, Jeff and Kritter for their direct assistance.
Except for my Rickenbacker and Martin instruments, all my gear is modest. I'm poor as a churchmouse. It's mostly junk.
I'm junk too. But the songs are stellar.
The music gear includes Behringer AC112 and BX1800 amps,
1987 Tascam 424 Portastudio as a mixer,
new M-Audio Keystation 49e for software instruments, all standard GarageBand plug-ins,
mixed using for reference a pair of 1974 Bose 901s (orig. EQ, natch), with a modern Sony solid state amp,
Shure SM58 mic,
Behringer FCB1010 midi foot control board for wah and volume pedals,
Boss RPQ10 preamp/parametric EQ,
the guitars are my c.1981 4001wal, 1982 320jet, a heavily modded Squier mini. 2008 Martin D16RGT.
Lyrics:
Be Bread
Two-trick Pony and the dead zone guy
got to scratching their heads 'bout the future of the empire
Pony said My, it's as easy as pie
rub two big sticks together make a bonfire
Love, love's got the drop on me
Boomtown Mackie and the Flintstone girls
never really understood tho they never tried to ask it
(what's) happened to the world, what are we doing here
where are we going now in a Gucci handbasket?
Love, love's got the drop on me
If you've not been fed, be bread
Dominoes
constantly working and building and saving to get what is coming to me
my dream house, my shiny car
running the rat race with things as they happen, it all makes good sense now to me
I'm hitched to that falling star
wheels and deals and well-laid plans all go to pieces when it hits the fan
where were the federal men when the black tide broke the levee
and oh, how the people all felt as we all fell into queue
just like dominoes
gunshots and sirens and rising black water, how could this be happening to you
this is not my beautiful home
maybe when things get a little bit better I'll find my way back home to you
till then, love, I'll walk alone
both songs copyright 2008 Kira Moon
More information is available at my website. Thanks everyone involved, Mark, Peter, my fellow forumites and artists. I'm looking forward to hearing the results of our co-operation, also to doing it again next year.

A studio on a sailboat! How cool is THAT!
That TASCAM 4-track looks almost identical to mine, except I think mine is a 464. Those things are awesome. I used mine to record my first album, Dysfunctional Illaureate.
For my song 'Throwaway' I used my 1968 4001 MG as the main bassline,

and my 1976 4001FL doubling the bassline during the quiet middle section.

The '68 was recorded direct, through a SWR SM-400 head + 4x12 Hiwatt cabinet, and through a Vox AC-100 head + 2x15 cab. The guitar parts were played on a metal-rific Charvel that I bought in 1990. I'm not really happy with the guitar sound on this mix of Throwaway, and given my propensity for OCD when mixing, I'm sure this song will go through a dozen more remixes before it makes it to my 3rd album. I also sang and programmed the drums using an Alesis HR-16.
'Throwaway' was all performed, recorded, and mixed by myself using a Roland VS1680 digital 16-track this past October.
'Throwaway' lyrics
If the breed tears us apart, will we still remember - in our time
Instead of
Making time a casualty, losing all the memories that we hold
Instead of...
Dragging our dead weight behind, spirits drowning in the undertow
Instead of
Blind compassion for the ones who locked our doors and shut out all the light
But someone set us wrong
We're only screaming at the walls
It's come too far to fall
We never leave here after all
But I can't help but look back
To where we were surrendered
And although you were forsaken
Your face I still remember - (You have no idea)
But someone set us wrong
We're only screaming at the walls
It's come too far to fall
We never leave here after all
What we see is never coming...
'Cause somebody set us wrong...
So there's all that.

Okay, my submission, or rather my band's submission, was "Entry-Level Blues", by The Jazz Funeral.
Everything was recorded into my ancient-yet-still going strong Roland VS-2480. The mastering was done in Logic.
The guitar used on the track was this one ('87 381v69):

I used the middle pickup position, with D'Addario Chromes strings. All guitar tracks were run through a Janglebox, and Boss DD-20 (for slapback), and a modded Ibanez TS-9 Tubescreamer into an AC-30 CC.
The bass used was this one "(99 4003v68):

It was strung up with TI Jazz Flats, and I played it with the mutes up on the bridge pickup. I ran it through the "Pepperland" setting on my Bass POD and added slapback echo through the board.
Also featured predominantly is my mid 80's Yamaha M1A, with a touch of organ on my Yamaha Motif 6 and a bit of glockenspiel as well:

All instruments were played by me except the drums, which were played by our drummer, Mike Parascandola. All vocals are me, except the middle "chorus", which features the whole band.
The lyrics:
Lily was a librettist, writing opera on the ancient Greeks
But now her days are so routine
She drifts away, plans her great escape, waiting for the 6:15
hitchin' her way to old New Orleans
Mary in her apron, wearin' out her sandal shoes
From kickin' away those big city blues
She worked her way through the harvest, 'till the winter frost it came
Now she sings the blues again
Brian, I believe, that this is killing me
But I won't let it be the death of me
The court jester \lost his smile, from thinning worthless blood
And letting his name get dragged through the mud
Now he sits behind a camera, with his pockets turned inside out
Well ain't that what it's all about?
Spoken: And me, I'm stuck working for old Mr. Roberston, on that bumpy assembly line, drinking my way through the old familiar grind
The Jazz Funeral (live setup, anyway) is myself (guitar/vocals/piano/harmonica), Dave Stagno (piano/guitar/vocals), Mike Parascandola (drums), AJ Parascandola (guitar/mandolin/steel), Tom Rudolph (bass).

YES! The Roland VS-Series RULES!
Love that 381v69! That model epitomizes the Cadillac of Ricks for me.

Y'know, I'm just about ready to move onto Logic full time, but this board has served me well for a long time. I love the thing!walker wrote:YES! The Roland VS-Series RULES!

John - I noticed that you mixed 'Entry Level Blues' in mono. Was this by design of keeping in line with the Brian Wilsonesque quality of the tune? I know he mixed the Beach Boys material in mono because he was deaf in one ear.

Song - Ain't Letting Go, The Shamus Twins
I paid the engineer And began recording
I sang all the parts. I used my '67 4005 through a Pod set at Pepperland, '66 360/12 (Jangleboxed, IIRC) and '87 1997VB through a Fender Blues Deluxe.
Shamus guitarist Dino played one rhythm track with his Tele, I played one with my 1997 and double tracked my Gibson J-185.
I played the lead, doubled, with the 1997 & my Strat and play those little flourishes on the first bridge with the Strat.
Shamus Perry played drums after everything but vocals were recorded.
Last thing I added was the tambourine.
Had no words when laying down vocals, no arrangement, no plan,
Hit and miss while the meter $$$ ran.
On Pro Tools
Words
I had to ramble and do what I pleased
Cause lovers and friends had me so ill at ease
Now I got you, I ain't letting go.
They hit my heart and soul with shrapnel
I sometimes wished I was somebody else.
Now I...
My worried brain could not abide the strain
Been driving too fast, no brakes, no lights,
Downhill, in the rain.
Been looking for a grounded angel
I think I knew one once very well
Now I...

Band: It Rhymes With Orange
Album: It Rhymes With Orange
Song: Mountain
You will hear a Gretsch 6120 doing the distortion parts and a '90 RIC 370/12SPC JG doing the jangly parts. Oh, and a 4003 of course for the bass. All recorded at home.

My track is: Who Do You Think You Are?
Band: Donut Kings
Bass: 1975 white w/BT 4001, with a few "mods"
Basic Tracks recorded at Zing Recording Studios
Overdubs and mix at Green Rack Audial Kitchen
From the CD: Seven (recorded Oct 2006-Spring 2007)
website: http://www.donutkings.com
myspace: http://myspace.com/donutkings
Lyrics:
Who Do You Think You Are
©2005 Donut Kings
Panels of dark cherry line the wall
Smells of the distant past fill the air
Something that people see in the hall
Get up and wonder if you dare
Who Do You Think You Are
I could Cry
Who Do You Think You Are
Tell me why
You’re in your own corner – of the pen
Hitting with a Left then a right
Blows keep getting harder and again
Who’ll be left to cleanup the Fight
Having the same dream every night
Poison Ivy, Big Wheel and the Doors
Sometimes it just don’t feel right
Circles in and out and there's more

HA! Nice, Jerry. I think I've worked with your engineer before. He's got a big plaque on the studio wall that says:
"What - Me listen?"

Mr Satellite.
Well, this is just more or less a live demo really. No overdubs or post production to speak of, other than the panning of some tracks left and right. That is why the vocals are a bit quiet in the mix.
All my 3 Rics feature, (330/6, 360/12, 620/6)
The 360/12 is routed through a Janglebox before going into the Vox AC30.
The others have no other FX other than what is available on the AC30's.
The bass is a hofner (Laney amp).
The keyboard is a Korg.
I think that the drums are a mixture, but as I don't understand drums or drummers, I'll say no more than that!
Recorded onto a humble old Roland VS 1880, and then mixed straight onto CD from there.
The vocal effect on the middle eight is actually me singing through a megaphone (bullhorn?)
The lyrics are certainly not my best, but they serve a purpose and suit the style of song well.
Lyrics..........
HIGH………
HIGHER THAN THE SUN……
MILES ABOVE THE CLOUDS
IN AMONGST THE SUPERSOUND
AWAY………
AND SLOWLY START TO SPIN……….
TUMBLE THROUGH THE SKY
LIKE A SATELLITE
PAINT IT BLACK AND HIDE
PHOTOGRAPH YOUR LIFE
FADING OUT INSIDE
MR SATELLITE….
SOON…..
THE LIGHT WILL BURN THE SHADE…….
WITH THE SWEET, THE BITTER FADES
AND THEN YOUR ON YOUR WAY
AWAY………
AND SLOWLY START TO SPIN……….
GRAVITY WILL PULL YOU IN
LIKE A SATELLITE
PAINT IT BLACK AND HIDE
PHOTOGRAPH YOUR LIFE
FADING OUT INSIDE
MR SATELLITE......
The stars of the show.............

The engine room............

Haven't recorded a song with a Ric in over 25 years..will have to get back to you..
