Another vote for vertically, with the headstock up.

Where in the world can I store all these hundred dollar bills? The guitars have my closets filled.
Isn't that what those pockets inside the guitar cases are for?

You left out one question I have. I 've heard it is good to keep some tension on the neck but say for an old 12 would you detune to relieve some tension or not? I heard it is not good to completely loosen the strings when storing but might be good to releive neck from full tension no?

I suppose a half step couldn't hurt.

A half-step (or even a full step) doesn't help, doesn't hurt.

Might as well leave it tuned to pitch...if the neck's adjusted properly, keeping tension on the strings balances the structure.

I have heard 12 string necks are under enormous pressure that is why I asked. If anything could it save your reissue R life? Which seem to eventually break under pulling pressure?

Some R tailpieces have broken. The vast majority have not. Ricks are designed to have full tension on the neck at all times. Probable best to leave it that way.

Reissue R? I suppose you mean the R tailpiece...

This is a very occasional occurrence, and seems to be batch-related and also more common (though still rare) in those that were powder-coated in black. The factory will replace a broken R tailpiece on an exchange basis.

To release the tension and leave the truss rods tensioned is not advisable, as it also stresses the neck and could lead to a twist or backbow, or both.

So, how about releasing the rods and releasing the strings as well? I suppose this is OK, but it can be testy to get the neck adjusted back up and stabilized. And, as we all know, once a Rick is set up to play properly, nothing can match that wonderful neck!

I had one R that had stress cracks in the chrome not sure if it went deeper. Not sure how long it would have lasted. Possibly a long time but I got another one as a backup then. OK well then I will store at full tension. Seems to be the full conensus.

Store them in the cases vertical with headstock up. I also segragrate the RICS so the Fenders & Gibby's don't fight with um.

I keep mine vertical with the headstocks up because they take up less floor area that way.
I don't think it's so much the position you store your guitars, as long as they are in their proper case. More important would be where you store your guitars.
