VIntage R problem

Since you say you have a reissue R tailpiece, why not just use that? You can still hang onto the original sixties part.

As I said in my post I am using it but the slots are slightly over to one side more than the 60's R. So with the reissue R the strings to the bridge are on an angle. I guess it only makes a difference asthetically. I like it when the strings look straight all the way up from the R. No big deal I guess, I am just picky.

I think i read somewhere that sometimes 6's were fitted with 12 string R's, maybe you could find a vintage 6 string that has a 12 R and swap it out.

AFAIK, there is no such thing as a vintage "R" tailpiece that isn't cut for 12 strings. I think they were done that way to save time or something----I've never seen a 6 string vintage R. (nor has some prominent Ric luthiers I've talked to).

Plus, wouldn't that deprive a vintage 6-string Rickenbacker of it's original part? Unless a project guitar was parted out or something, it'd be a shame to swap that part out, and it's not like any vintage Ric is "falling off trees" cheap.

Honestly, I'd find another, 1) fixing it would devalue/ruin the integrity the part more, 2) R's don't necessarily have a rep for being the strongest part and I simply wouldn't want my Vint. 12 wearing a repaired part that could possibly give

It's OK I am confident I can engineer a piece to wedge/fit in the now larger single slot with a string like half circle on either side. I am prett good with tools.

I used a hard rubber wedge. It works like a charm. It is in the shape of a square A with enough room on each side and when the strings are pulled to tention it gets squeezed in there. Genius.

Now I can use my 60's R.

I have a '66 330 with a 12-string tailpiece that has the same break, on the high E string. Since there is no metal in that slot, obviously a string won't hold, so I put it alongside the B string (one string on either side of the metal tab). I've used it that way for years with no problem, though I dislike the look of it.
