I've actually noticed that the vast majority of people think these are and were great basses, from the start. But I guess they didn't sell well; same story with the 4002.
I've never played one but I've played a few 2030s and they were all great; they're another "poor child" as far as the RIC product line goes but I enjoyed playing them.

I have both a 2030 and a 3000 and in my ears the 2030 sounds a bit boring (like any other thirteen to the dozen bass) and the 3000 has character just like any other Rickenbacker bass.

I didn't really perceive that difference.

Might be the strings, who knows. My 2030 is one of the best sounding Rics I have.I just wish it was better balanced, not so neck heavy.

I did not say it sounds bad. It sounds good/balanced. It sounds like a whole lot of basses could sound. It does not make me recognize it's sound immidiately and say "Hey, I hear a Rickenbacker".

I've owned this 4003 for about a month. People talk about piano tone - this baby has it. A nice selection of tones on hand.

The 2030 apparently started out with single coils, then evolved into humbuckers. Mine has single coils. I think it has the wiring where with both pickups on and volume pots up all the way the hum is canceled. I know that I prefer to just have one pickup on (neck) with this one. The single coil versions apparently had 3000/3001 pickups. With the 400X series I blend in both pickups.
This is mine:

I bought this one a couple months ago, but I still haven't seen it.

I may have to drive down to FLA to pry it out of my brother's hands!

That's an old picture Kevin, I have one here somewhere with the chrome cover on it....and it all cleaned and shined up pretty. Joey spent hours on it giving it the "treatment".
LOL, well, thinking about it...sure is ONE way to get your butt down here for a visit!
We should have thought of that sooner.
