Does the genre still exist? Most "country" bands I see these days are just pop rock bands with twangy vocals and occasionally a pedal steel or mandolin thrown in for good measure.

Yes, Emmylou is country, indeed. She's old school, thankfully. I particularly loved her work with Gram Parsons.

That's just the thing, though. She's not really modern country. She's been doing the same thing all along.

As for the original topic, I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use my 4003 if I landed a country gig. Like Joshua said, that neck pickup won't steer you wrong in that scenario.

Having spent much of 2010 living in and playing in Nashville, I can tell you that every conceivable type of country is alive and well. "Traditional" country may not get the same radio time that some folks want, but there's a mess of folks pouring their hearts and souls into that genre.

Personally, I love a lot of different types of country (I strongly dislike others!). Most pop music (be it pop country, pop R n' B, pop rock, etc.), though, is a "watered down" version of what some folks consider the "real deal." That's the history of pop music. Keep in mind that what everyone is saying about Gloriana is the same thing folks said about Johnny Cash and the third wave of country music back in the 50s and 60s. He was popular rubbish back then compared to Roy Acuff.

That's my subjectivist mini rant
