Fair play Jeff. I didn't realise they were conversions! Very nice. My main axe is a Musicman 5 string, so not sure how the dimensions of this compare to your conversions. I must admit I do like a wide neck to play with cos I like to bend the strings a bit, though the whole idea of finding a 4003s/5 is to get that Rick sound with 5 strings, so I ain't gonna be slapping death out of it! That's what Musicman basses are for!!

I take 4 string basses and convert them to 5 strings ... for me they feel and play a lot better ... I have converted 2 Ric's from 4 to 5 ... I will try a 4003 soon ... I got the idea because the 4003s5 is really a modified 4003 4 string ... they modified a few pieces of hardware cut the wood slightly different ...
Your musicman 5 string has a wide neck ... I play 4 to 5 conversions with slimmer necks ...
Here's some pics of some of my conversions ... but they don't sound as good as my Rics ...

What the story behind the blue quilted maple P body? The color is great, What's the tone like with all the Seymours?

Welcome Nelly, 4001/3 basses are my main 4 string basses, but I've always play 5 string basses the last several years. my Rick 4 string basses tuned BEAD can't do it all. MM StingRay5 basses were my main 5ers until I got a great deal on my 4003S/5 blue beast. The string spacing is still a bit tight to me, but the sound of that bass is the greatest. I can't wait to get my 4004Cii5.
I'm sure you'll eventually find your 4003S/5

That quilted p-bass is a damaged body that I got off ebay ... it is all chipped and cracked ... the black tape hides the flaws ... it sounds and plays good ... it has a cheap neck that I scavenged from a project bass that had a chewed up body from too many pickup routings ...
It has a sd hot jazz neck pu, a 1/4 pound p-bass mid and a 1/4 pound jazz bridge ... wired vol, vol, vol, tone ... passive ... the bass looks, feels, plays and sounds good ... and I don't have to baby it ... I can bang it like Pete Townsend .. One time I banged it so Hard then I detuned it a whole step flat ... all five strings ... I sometimes bring it as a backup to my 4003s5 when gigging ... it usually sits on a stand ...
Joey ... it takes time to get used to the 4003s5 spacing ... if you have smaller or average hands then you will adjust ... the problem is then a 4 string bass will seem to have the strings too far apart ...
