I know you're right Peter, but if I can't see my 6 Rics all at once, I have panic attacks! It's stands for me, after all Rics are not just guitars...they are art...they are my right arm!

I take it then that your body is just a stand for your right arm?

The solution is obvious-hire a professional artist to paint the image of your guitar on the front of the case. You can have you eye candy and a safely stored guitar.

A little late, but I did find the Polaroid picture of my guitar rack. Here it is:



As can be seen, it fit behind the door nearly perfectly and held eight guitars. Of course, now I have too many ... so I used the wood from the rack above to build a vertical storage rack:



Other guitars are in their cases in the closet.

Well, I have looked everywhere to find shelves, but no luck. I have decided to build, so I will post a picture in a couple of weeks (I hope). I have a lot of room, so I want to lay the cases flat, and have about 10 – 12 shelves high.

I, for one, will be interested to see how that works out, David. If I had the space and were doing storage your way (horizontal), I'd be tempted to put drawer slides on the shelves (on the ends or the bottom): slide the shelf out like a drawer, open the case, take the guitar out, close the case, push the drawer back in out of the way, play the guitar. It could get complicated quickly, but that might be a really cool way to store them. Thanks for the inspiration!

I'm finishing my basement into a playroom (kids)/music room. I have to build some sort of shelf to store my four different guitars (330/12 being one of them!). I'm thinking of storing them, in cases, vertically in one of the closets. I'd have some sort of platform to keep them about 10" off the basement floor (have to assume the worst case possibility of a flood!). I'd also have them at a slight angle. Leaning toward the back of the closet. Kind of an easy angle to pull out. Probably staple some rug on the shelf to minimize scraping damage to cases.

My other alternative would be to make a bench seat/storage box that holds the guitars inside. The top would be a hinged seat with a padded top. Though with four guitars, it could be too deep for a normal seat.

Put 'em on the wall in a hanging case!!! Plexi front, hinged, lined with some black velour, hooks to retain them, vertically/horizontally, whatever. Make your own "Hard Rock Basement"! On the floor (even 10" off the floor, in a damp closet microclimate? Never!!! Floods? NIGHTMARISH!

Like many things in life, my project has not got started. My solution is to buy more guitars until the sheer number forces me to build.

Martin, I am going to eventually move everything to the basement. But make sure you have good climate control. I live in an old Chicago building with radiator heat, (basement was an apartment, so they extended the radiator to cover the basement). I put in forced air conditioning last summer and included to vents for the basement. When I finally finish the basement I will have a portable humidifier and dehumidifier (70 degrees, 50% humidity year round).

We are in the finishing stages of the basement and we do keep the climate "living friendly". Winters, we have had baseboard heat installed, summers, we have dehumidifier running constantly. And this is a dry basement! We've never had water etc...

The closet doors are louvered. More expensive, yes, but at least it keeps air circulated better then having the closets closed with solid doors.

But I'm never one to temp fate. They not sitting on the floor! But keeping them in the cases is going to maintain a more constant humidity/temperature than leaving them directly exposed. Not as glamorous, but I believe safer. Also this is a shared space with my 4 and 6 year olds!!! End of story! : - )

Martin I agree, I'm going to lay them flat in shelfs, case kept. I would also recommend getting a temp. and humity gauge. I am going to get one of those huge old 70's ones with three dials.
