I used to use GK amps..really crisp and clean but every time I'd turn it on it would pop through the speakers. The guy at GK said it was normal. Having lost a pair of speakers due to a power surge several years ago, I decided it was an annoying design flaw and switched to AMPEG.

Hmmmmm...mine never does that. I always make sure to have the master volume down when turning it on, though. Your problem was probably unrelated to that, though.

GK rep said it was "normal". This was a late 90's 400RB. My previous GK did it too.

I love my GK (700RB210) except for an anoying hf hiss from the horn. All consumer reviews mention this phenom. Mine actually thumps when shut off. I believe this to be due to the pedal board (Sansamp DI)more than the GK amp. I agree with Dane that some of the design issues are rather poor. I liked the SWR when I tried it, but my decision to purchase was ultimatly based on the tilt-back/retractable handle/wheels since I church gig it weekly. I actually practice with an old Polytone Minibrute II jazz amp for the headphone jack and small size. These little amps kick butt for bass practice(100w X single 12").

One more vote for anything large, heavy and full o' tubes. My personal favs:
-Mesa/Boogie D-180, 400, 400+
-Ampeg 70's SVT, SVT II, B-15, B-18
-Sunn 300T
-Fender Bassman 300
-Marshall Major
-Matamp/Green anything
A few hybrid amps I like (mostly because they are a little "tubish"):
-Ashdown ABM Series
-EBS Fafner
-Mesa/Boogie Big Block 750

The Sunn 200S and 2000S are pretty cool too, but if you use those, you really need the 2x15 JBL cab to make them really perform. Also, the early 80's MTI SVT's are fine amps too. A little cheaper than the 70's ones, but they are almost identical and sound great too.

Them old SUNN 2000S were fine amps-until you had to recap 'em!
The problem is voltage ran an excess of 570v, whereas the new CE versions go to 525 (HA!). You have to end up 'making' a capboard just for the filtering section-damn.
Then hi quality 6550s are a little pricey, and not Sovteks!
IMHO
