Patrick, welcome to the board....there's some black and I think, chrome non-rick 4003 guards on ebay right now...

Jennies Pickguards can make you one from your original, and Wd Music also sells them. There was someone a little while ago here that was for some reason, having a hard time getting a black cover from the usual sources ie: Rickenbacker and their dealers (maybe they were out of stock or it was a 4001 guard, I don't remember)
As for the truss rod cover, I believe that the only place to get them are from Rick...Some real ones do show up on ebay but I have yet to see a black one...I suppose that you could get some 1/8" black plexi and make your own. Keep on Rick'n, David

Patrick, from your description of your 4001, I can't help but imagine it to be similar to this
Montezuma Brown which is the new 2003 color.
Some people at the voxtalks bbs said this new MB finish was very similar to their Walnutglo although Mr. John Hall said it was really difficult to capture the richness and nuances of the MB with a camera.

David, I saw those pickguards you speak of.they are two piece and mine is a one piece(the mirror one looks cool)...Don, I saved your email adress,I'll be in touch....Paul, the other pic posted by Jeff Rath is actually pretty close although,I really like that Mont.Brown.looks like a Ric version of tobacco sunburst..I would like to see a 4003 in that color

Hah! Found this at Alt.gtr.rickenbacker:
--------------------------------------------------
What is the difference between Autumnglo and Walnut?
"The earliest version of Autumnglo was simply shaded brown. The middle
clear areas on most of these old guitars have yellowed, but wasn't
originally apparent. The next version was just Fireglo laid on rather
heavily. The last version was back to that original brown, but in a
satin finish, while the gloss version of that color was designated
Walnut.
So when someone says Autumnglo, you always have to ask "WHICH
Autumnglo"?"

I have a brand new, never mounted black single piece Rickenbacker pickguard for a 4003. I bought it about three years ago for a Blackstar project I was working on, and didn't end up using it. $25.00 + your choice of shipping/insurance. I also have one for a 4001V63, from '97, same price, new, never used.
Regarding my earlier comments on Squire's 4008, I have seen two additional photos of the bass and I am wrong about the triangle inlays...it had dots. It also does not appear to have had black neck binding, either. The body binding appears to be black and it's really tough to tell if it had block binding. Based on the picture, which also had Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman present, it looks to be from sometime in '72, but more probably from '73. The position of the neck pickup was closer to the end of the fretboard.

UPDATE: I am the PROUD owner of a brand spankin new jetglo 4003.(made in dec. 02).I actually had it a week now and lovin' it...the very first thing I noticed(that's dirrerent than my 82 4001) was the neck...a tad wider and thicker than a 4001.I really like the feel of the new design.(this bass has the most beautiful grain in the fretboard) the next thing I noticed(when I plugged in)was this bass is MUCH louder than my 4001. there seems to be more low's too. did Ric decide not to put the 3rd. cap in the bridge p\u??? I ask because that p\u is a rabid monster...upon further inspection,I noticed that the headstock is slightly different.the straplocks are a nice touch(but Ric should supply the the other ends too).so far I'm trying to get used to the p\u cover on the bridge p\u because it looks so cool. I normally take it off(must leave it stock for at least one week)but this time I'm going to try to leave it on..OH...one more thing, I heard an ugly RUMOR that John Hall is looking to sell Rickenbacker...PLEASE tell me it is'nt so..I can not fathom the idea of Ric owned by some mega giant company who would put quanity over quality...or worse yet...FORIGEN OWNERSHIP!!overseas production is a VERY scary thought..a nightmare actually..PLEASE squash this rumor now. P.S. I am not giving the source of this info to protect the innocent and\or misinformed until it is confirmed from a reliable(John Hall)source that this is in fact true..MR. Hall if you're reading this, please set the record straight. thank you.

Ooph - that is interesting news/rumor - if true my finances might suffer a hit. . . for the "pre CBS" models.

Don't believe rumors ... I was in a national chain music store and they said RIC was going out of business ... That was their explanation for not having Rics in stock ... the truth is they were more interested in moving their cheap basses than carrying high end models ... so you can't always believe what you hear ...
louder pickups ... along about 1970 they came out with the high gain pickups ... these were louder than the toaster and high gain from the '60's ... then the high gain from the '80's were even hotter ... then the high gain from 1990 to now are even hotter ... also the reisue toaster and horseshoe pickups are hotter than their '60's counterparts ...

I believe RIC discontinued the .0047mfd cap in the early '80s.
And congratulations, Patrick.
There are never too many RIC basses in the house.

Well, at one time (late nineties) I had eight 4001s, one 4003 and one 4080. Currently I own four 4001s and the 4080.
Then in 2003 I came up with the ultimate treble high-gain - a beauty, a bad ***, the mother of them all. It blows both the various original versions and the replacements therefor out of the water. And... the .0047 cap stays!
