Now I remember, John - I did see Ricky Nelson playing a Rickenbacker folk guitar on one of the Ozzie and Harriet episodes of which I am very fond of. I don't remember seeing it more than once though - as I would have remembered the distinctive Ric headstock logo. I know he had a special guitar made for him which said "Ricky Nelson" on it but don't remember that as a Ric?? Do you remember? Thanks for your posts and info on the acoustics...

Nice pic of the Jim Reeves Connection, John, and their Rics. Unusual that they are all "powder or baby blue"...you normally wouldn't think of that color as a "manly" color for a guitar in a guy's group.

Nice pics Ron - of that Ric 700C acoustic. That is a very handsome guitar indeed! Only thing I'd be worried about is getting a lot of finger prints and swirl marks on that beautiful black finish.....That's why I shy away from getting a Black 325 like John L's.

Thanks for all your info on the acoustics Paul....Didn't know you were still building them in SF! Wow! I'm afraid to ask how much they cost! I'm going to check out your nice pics of them again.....

Yep. The project is "advancing", as you put it, Andy, with the building of bending jigs for the sides and a mold for the body. I hope to get a small batch finally done sometime this summer (fingers crossed...)

I recently finished re-topping a factory-built JG 700C with a new spherical-radiused top to put the top plate into tension, and relocated bracing, to liven up the sound. The sonic results are noticeable and startling. Visually, the 360" spherical radius (same as the back normally gets) prevents the "too-flat" look of a dead flat top, and allows the top to resist the string forces better. This is especially visible in a JG guitar as perfectly straight highlights and a mirror-like reflectance of the guitar's surroundings, with no distortion of the thin top wood anymore:

I'd like to see that in a parlor guitar with a nice, deep cutaway.

The finish is stunning. Like a mirror. That's one guitar I would be afraid to play for fear of scratching it.

Much of my work comes as referrals from RIC. I don't let anything go out until it's just right. This means I'm often behind schedule, but it also means I very seldom get returns or reworks. (Twice since 2005, and once was because of shipping damage and was paid for by UPS.)

It's intimidating when something is so fragile and close to perfection. Like that Duo-Sonic that you built, Paul - I must have had it for six months before I would really just casually work out with it. But we're getting along famously now and she's still pretty much like I got her. What a gorgeous and flawless finish in Desert Sand! I think they'll bury me with this one.

Around the harbor we have a saying: "Perfection never leaves the dock". Sad but true!

I found a holy grail, but I can only watch it.
