Thanks, Ed! As you will read in the SB chapter, there was likely a lot of variation in the brief career of the B bass. It was initially advertised (in Japan, anyway) as the 4001SB, then later as the 4003SB. The one in the advertisements was certainly a 4001S as it has the shedua strip in the neck but not the body (set-neck was standard on the 4001S at that time). It appears that some came with the Rick-O-Sound, some (if not all) with Grover tuners, and I wouldn't be surprised by variation in the one- or two-piece pickguard. Since so few have turned up in my eight years of research, we may never know all the variables. I believe the inconsistencies, as well as the "inaccuracies" of the B bass (assuming it was made to emulate PM's 1964 4001S) drove John Hall to discontinue that model and develop the much more "accurate replica" 4001V63.

Without all of you, this book would not have been possible. I should be hoisting all of you on my shoulders! But I'm not going to do that because I have this thing with my back . . . .

Got mine today and going through it now. Excellent job, Paul!

A job well done! Got it two days ago along with a stomach flu.
Kept it at my bedside and the book got me through it

mine came today (two days early!!!)!!!! initial go thru ... well the word that comes to mind is SPLENDID! It is better than advertized!!! now to take my time and read it (yes I read Playboy and Penthouse too) cover to cover!! Thanks Paul for all the hard work!
