**** yeah, Scott! +1! And I see your avatar reflects your perspective!

Thanks for the props, Neil. Even though I favor the bass, I like to think that the mixes are fairly balanced. I noticed that your stuff has a big guitar sound. I love big guitars, too, but honestly your drop-D twins are too loud in the mix. Your bass sounds great but is only present in fleeting passages. It definitely deserves to hold more prominence as a staple to your rhythm section. And once you start adding vocals to the mix, the guitars are really going to need to come down. They cover a wide sonic range, and with that heavy saturation/distortion, their presence will still cut through just fine at a lower volume in the mix. Egos may have to be sacrificed for the greater good. (Way to alienate yourself from 2/5 of the band, Walker!)

Peter - don't be fooled by the appearance of the Bass Gopher in the HS cavity. That's merely how they get in & out, but trust me - they do all kinds of burrowing below the surface. Do you really want a chambered 4001??? It may sound interesting in concept, but those gophers don't know when to quit.

Bill, too cool! WPEC is a sister station of where I work. Sure wish our station would do such things in the morning shows. They do weather and live animals. Great exposure for your band. Kudos.

Bass gophers are seen most prominently in the SF Bay area. Conditions there are ideal for their reproduction.

Nice, Stanley. Please tell us more about your 5002. If I understand your post correctly, then I have the same problem with the strap button placement. I'm tempted to put a new hole in my '95 MG.

Jason,

The main problem was that it was not a Rickenbacker strap! A second problem is that the mandolin needs straplocks, that strap let go more than once. So far, it hasn't hit the floor....

We players have to wonder why they would have placed the upper strap button where they did. I suppose the final answer would be "to be true to the original 1950's instruments," but it sure doesn't make much sense when you strap it on and try to play it without sending it to the floor. I'm very lucky; I've gigged with mine a few times and never had a crisis. But I think I'll take my straplocks off one of my other instruments and put them on the 5002 now that I've read your posts on the topic.

So what year is yours? How do you like it compared to acoustics for playing feel? I did some neck measurements this weekend and was very surprised with what I found:

1st to 8th strings distance:
brand new Rogue acoustic (the cheap one) 7/8"
'95 5002 MG 15/16"
'09 5002 JG (still for sale, people) 1 1/16"

I think I'm going to have a new nut made for the '95, to match the acoustic spacing. It is SOOOOOO much more comfortable to play. But then, I like cramped string spacing; I guess I'm weird. The '09 is probably much friendlier for beginners... which I was six months ago! 8)
