That is a drawing I took out of the Smith book. In the book the number is 2,089,171, dated Aug 10, 1937.

Thanks Jeffrey, that should be enough for me to find it.

I took the shoes off of two V63's, the sound was less full and the pickups were noisier and JH has said several times that taking the shoes off will definitely affect the tone. It's not a huge difference but it is noticable and they do sound much better with the shoes on. I can't play with those damn things in the way either, that's why I sold both of mine.

Do you know if its possible to order just the chrome surroud that those horseshoe pickups fit into as they screw to the body? I have a friend who wants just that part to replace his rusty one.

removing shoes
When I replaced my shoes with a wooden spacer I noticed the slight thinning in tone but loved the playability.
I now have a couple of steel spacers (didn't have thick enough steel handy, so needed two, slightly thicker overall than the shoes.)
this, to me, sounds very close to the sound with the horseshoes on, (with the exception of the extra sounds available from plucking over the pickup)
and it's reversible,
