I'd like to see the case for that thing.

I had a 76 azureglo and I must admit I've always loved the colour. The bass was only average as Ricks go though. However my ultimate Rick would be a 72 or earlier in azureglo (which I believe are pretty rare);anybody got one, just out of interest? I'd love to see one.

Yeah, so would I.
That H*m*r is downright ugly and let's face it, its concept is way too whacky to be any real fun from any standpoint.
Jeff: Thanks. Originally it came with black guards & TRC's, but to me (and to Steve, obviously) white looks better on the Azureglo finish. I would dearly like to find a mid-70's 4001 in Azureglo. Shouldn't be that easy locally, though, I'm afraid.

I,ve been looking for one for a while. Simon Mole on Bjorn,s site www.rickbeat.com has a 72 A/G with all the cool appointments. He likes blue...Not very many of them about...

Simon's Rickenbacker collection is staggering!
As for early 70's Azureglo 4001's, I remember seeing one on Ebay (sold!) a couple of days back.

There's a 4001 azureglo from 1980 (I think) on e-bay UK, auction just started. My 76 still wasn't that great compared to my other Ricks; only my 80 was (marginally) worse. It was vastly inferior IMHO to my 72 4001 and 73 4000, and also my CS (and 8 string for that matter).

Simon's collection IS staggering;I've viewed it before. I missed the 72 azureglo though....and I thought I was jealous before! What I'd give for that bass (although I suppose I could always get one in another colour and have it refinished - not quite the point though).

Shaun, what didn't you like about your 80 (4001?) I have an 81 4003 and it's one of the nicest Rics I've ever played. The finish scratches really easily though.

Hi Bob

There were a few things I didn't like about my 80 4001, although seeing as in the end it was stolen (and it was my first bass)I'd still quite like it back! It was VERY nasal sounding, with no zing at all, and no growl either (didn't know about the cap back then and ended up having the pickup rebuilt, which only improved matters a little). It was also heavy (I generally prefer lighter basses), and it had the narrower 74ish onwards neck, which with hindsight I like less, and the fatter body/horns which I also like less. I could never get it to sound "like a Rick should". Don't get me wrong, I was so proud of it when I got it, but it just never delivered. I'd be very interested to hear that rebuilt pickup with the cap removed though! I guess ultimately its each to his own; when I sold my 76 to a friend, he liked it much more than my 72, which is my favourite of all the Ricks I've played.
