Ilan, I bought my 65 hofner violin bass in 1983..I was just 16... nobody played those basses at that time.. simply nobody wanted them anymore... I paid around 70 dollars for it...while a horrible new fenderfaker price was at least 100/150 $...and I found an excellent conditions hoffy... I could sell it for 2-3000 dollars now...

When i was 17... i cannot really remember what i was doing, but i clearly remember i had no idea what is Rickenbacker (shame on me). And i listened to Doors, Nirvana and Dire Straits mostly, some 60s American garage rock as well... went to the "underground" concerts (which is still the case several years on) and was in a band (which is not the case several years on)... Oh yeah... and i started studying English back then...

under the "family" of "rats" there are several type of animals, including domestic ones.. I ignore the english name..But I guess Sheena's referring to that kind of pets
ok the latin word might be: Phodopus sungorus (cricetus)

Yes, that's true, Ilan. I like domestic rats - they are smart, cute and, moreover, they don't eat much and they're a lot of fun!

I did not play bass yet at 17 in 1977 and it would be another two years before I started. I did play the tuba however. I did not know a Rickenbacker from anything else yet either. I was however a big Rush fan and Geddy's 4080 made a lasting impression on me live (so did Gene Simons axe bass). It is funny to watch the archive videos on the R30 DVD. It all seemed so important at the time. Now, they look a bit cheesy. Gawd that Rick sounds good though.

IIRC, I was playing a Telecaster bass and also playing guitar in another band at 17. That was like a whole other lifetime ago, it seems like...ahhh, the Explorer years!

Speaking of concerts at 17...I forgot about this one: On my 17th birthday(July 26, 1983) my then girlfriend took me to Comiskey Park in Chicago to see Simon & Garfunkel. I'm not the biggest S & G fan but I do like them a lot and wanted to go to the show. What a great time. I've seen hundreds of concerts since that one, but that one stands out. The sound was excellent and we were close to the stage sitting on a blanket on the ball field (Chicago White Sox for those who don't know). It was a beautiful night and an outstanding show.

When I was 17, I was playing a Univox semi-hollow body bass and wished I had a Rickenbacker bass with a horseshoe pickup just like Paul MacCartney had. After all these years, I finally have one.

I've really enjoyed all the early "Ricky and I" photos on this thread.
I have a photo of me at 18 with my first Rick that's just a little too big(37.5kb) for me to post here. And I don't have any software to re-size it(Shhhhh....I'm at work!)
If anyone can volunteer to re-size it for me I'd appreciate it.

At 15 in 1965, I got a brand new Hofner beatle bass for 175. cdn with the real case.. joined a band in1967, and they said, you can't use that, and traded away for an EBO....yeeee-uch, then after traded for a 6 string gib with p 90's, then traded for a 62 jazz, then in late 69, traded the jazz for a 68 4001, of course later traded for a p then back to another 68-69 4001, then back to a jazz, later in 74 a 4000, then it and a p got traded in for a 76 BC Rich, which I still have..bead, and now I'm back to 4001c64, and now it has taken over.
