When, exactly, did that song hit the charts? Was it '66, or '67? I remember that it always put me in a good mood if I heard it first thing in the morning before school.

Spring of 1967 (their only #1 hit). I was just 5 then.

...Driven to it by their record company...Volman and Kaylan went along with it for the bucks, protesting all the way...then, when it hit#1, they were REALLY pressured to follow up, so they wrote "Elinor" and recorded it as a gag, knowing that their company would grab it and push it, and it did nearly as well.
This stuff is both sublime and awful. But it never fails to make me smile! Seeing Mark Volman in that yellow shirt and derby makes me grin out loud.

Yeah...this stuff is a long way off from their days as the Crossfires (a surf band) and even the sound of the first one or two albums released as the Turtles.

Yup, I thought I remembered being in the eighth grade when that song came out.

My fave Turtles album will always be "Battle of the Bands", a ridiculous "concept" album in which they assume, oh, perhaps 11, different identities ranging from their Crossfires persona to a bluegrass band call Fats Mallard and the Bluegrass Fireball.
It has a song, "You Showed Me", written by Jim McGuinn and Roger Clark, which was their last major hit.

Roger Clark? I thought it was Gene Clark who co-wrote that song with McGuinn, not?

Meant to say, "Roger McGuinn", early morning fuzziness, Jim. Of course, you're correct.

Here's another Byrds, Chimes of Freedom. McGuinn looks like he's singing live. They all have cords. Can anyone tell if this is totally live?
It's only a guess, but yes, I think it is live. The tempo seems to be a bit slower than the recording.

I love the Vapors New clear days and Magnets were terrific albums its a shame that turning Japanese stuck with this band they were much better than that.Cheers for the post
