A friend of mine here ordered a fretless one new back in the day. It has remained his number one bass to this day. It has some serious wear but it is a gorgeous instrument.
The thought of a pallet of them makes me wonder what else might be lurking in the remote sections of the warehouse.

John Hall himself, earlier in this very thread, said their were maybe 25 units, maybe more.

A few year back Carol Shelby announced that he'd "squirreled away" enough parts AND chassis to build about 100 or so Cobras. He called it his "retirement plan". This reminds me of that only I'd rather have the 4002 than the Ford.

Dane, I though the same thing about the parallel of the Cobras. I don't think he ever built them all, did he???

back about 1978 or 79 I went into guitar center in San Francisco and I brought in my 1968 4001 and offered it as a straight up trade for a brand new 4002 ... they turned me down and offer me a kramer bass ... I played the 4002 for a while and then took my 4001 home with me ... the 4002 was a nice bass ... I thought it was a better player than the 4001 ... but my old '68 is prettier ...

Dave...I don't remember what happened with the Cobras. It seems there was some issue about the cars having to pass federal safety and emmisions regulations even though all of the bodies had 1966 body tags.
John..if you sell us these basses, we promise not to drive them on the street.

Seriously ... I was thinking about proper allocation of resources ... those 4002 basses are an important cultural resource ... they should be allocated to those who would appreciate them for what they are ... they are not getting appreciated by sitting in a warehouse ...

...and exactly what kind of security system is on that warehouse anyway? Do you have employees working around the clock? How close to the nearest freeway entrance is the factory? On average what is the response time by Santa Ana's finest? Is the loading dock accessible from the street? Is the alarm hooked directly to a central monitoring station? I'm only asking because it sounds like I may take a trip to Santa Ana...I mean someoneelse may be looking to take a trip to Santa Ana. Someone other than myself. Yeah...that's what I mean.
