New RUSH Album in March 2002-------a return to the 4001???

After all this time a new album will be released by Rush in March...can't help but wonder if Geddy Lee will break his 4001 out of retirement. Has anyone heard any news???

John,
To the best of my knowledge Mr.Lee has an endorsment deal & a signature model bass with Wal, he is quite loyal that brand.
So it would be unlikely that the 4001 will come out of retirement, quite a pity really.

Actually, Geddy has a signature deal with Fender. Bass Player magazine had an interview with him last year when his solo album came out, and he stated that the only bass he was playing was his 1972 Fender Jazz. I think there was also a reference to Geddy wanting to find an old RIC 4000, but I think that was just a "to have" piece and not to play on live. I think he's in love with the Fender, he's been pretty much playing it since Moving Pictures (with the exception of his "Wal" phase in the early 90s).

Ain't there a law up in Canada for treasonous treachery in abandoning a Ric bass??!! As far as I'm concerned, that's a HANGING offense!! I mean, I'm sympathetic to Geddy playing an old Fender Jazz, even recording with it; completely understandable. But for him to just totally turn his back on the venerable Ric....... well, it just boggles the mind!

And here I used to think that Geddy was one of the Top 5 coolest bass players in the world. ~pphhhtt~ The news in these posts is forcing me to seriously reconsider that estimation.

He's had the Jazz since around the 'Permanent Waves' album; I think the first track he recorded with it was 'The Spirit of Radio'...I really think he uses it just 'cause he wants to. Even then he used the Rickenbacker live just about all the time until the 'Grace Under Pressure' tour.

The band has tended to get back to their 'roots' in recent years with simpler arrangments and a more raw, heavier sound. So I will remain optomistic for now that he may use his 4001 again one day.

Thanks for the post, Joel. It should be pretty good I would think; they have been through a lot since 1997 and 'Test For Echo'....This upcoming tour will be the 13th time for me and these guys, providing I get tickets. I have seen them evolve over many years---it is always cool.

I stood in line today to buy tickets for the upcoming Rush concert! At 3 minutes after selling time, they were sold out of real seats and only had lawn seating!!!

Sheesh.

Does anybody know the year that Geddy Lee's 4001 bass was manufactured? My husband and I were just wondering about that last night, and I told him that if anybody knew it would have to be somebody on this forum!

I was wondering about the jetglo mainly--I didn't know he had more than one.... I knew about the white one and the doublenecks (I think he had two of those)....

I'm positive the Jetglo 4001 appearing on the 'All The World's A Stage' album cover is from the first half of the 70's. A couple of details seem to date it to 1973.
As for Lee's other Rick basses, I'm sure they also are from the 70's. Anyone?

I should have been more specific in my question, sorry. What I would really like to know is....Geddy's very first 4001 that he used on the RUSH tour for their first album...what year was it and did it have the new style pickup or the original horseshoe pickup?

Well, in the EARLY EARLY days he used a P-Bass that was later cut down in the shape of a teardrop; his first Rickenbacker 4001 was a Jetglo 1972-73 with crushed-pearl inlay, closed-back Grovers and a toaster neck p/up and an under-string high-gain in the bridge position....after this he has had a sucession of Jetglo 4001 basses, a 4002, two doublenecks (4080 and 4080/12) and there is more that I've missed I'm sure. In a recent pic taken of Geddy while he was working on his solo album 'My Favorite Headache' showed one of his later 4001 basses hanging on the wall behind him shouting "....put DOWN the Fender!!!...." LOL
