Blowing up my PA?

Post by aristeas »

O/T I know but;
Can I run a line from my amp's 'line out' jack to a PA input? Or do I need anything in between to avoid blowing up the PA? This would really ruin my day.

As long as it is a line in and not a mic in, you are okay. Most decent mixers these days have a trim control that allows the input to accept anything from mic to line level, which is, -60dBu to +4 dBu, approximately.

In my experience, Lee, 'Line Out' is usually a low level output for input to another amp or a mixer, etc. from the pre-amp stage. You should be OK....... just make sure you don't go from 'Speaker Out' to PA input...... potential white hot PA system - BANG!!! Too much voltage.

'Line out' can often be 'straight out', which means the amp settings have no effect on what goes down the cable. You might want to experiment with the output into another amp to see what the effects do (at low volume!!).

the best way to do a direct out is with a balanced line out ... a 3 prong xlr out ... I believe miking a speaker sounds better ... a 2 pronged line out into a pa can buzz and hum sometimes ...

Thanks guys, mucho appreciated. I ran the line out of my bass combo straight into the mixer, first time I've done anything like that. Usually I mike up my valve amp, and I've never needed to boost a bass amp 'til I got this one.

Feeling good. Just back from rehearsal with that good ole 'play it fast and loud' glow on me.
