Finish Colors under UV Light

Post by surfrat »

This might seem like an unusual topic! A nightclub I frequently play has ultraviolet lighting in one area. I opened the case of my jetglo '78 4001FL in this spot recently and was totally astounded. This bass looked like it was a light powder blue color and the pickguard had gone from white to black, I thought somebody had pulled a fast one on me! So I just checked my other basses, my red 4003/5FL looks bright pink, and my silver 4003/8FL still looks silver but with a very light greenish glow, very unlike the green it is actually becoming. The rosewood necks all look dull white. I presume that this is largely due to the characteristics of the lacquer finish coat. Next time you're near UV light check this out, it's really weird!

I had a similar experience with my 330 FG in a club, under black lights. Looked like it had a battery in it and a clear top like a UFO...I had to take it out into a regularly lit room to make sure nothing had happened to it.

I've got a jetglo 3001 bass. In UV lights it's dark blue. The pickguard remains black.
