Recommended Speakers

Hi, Im buyin a Ampeg SVT 300watts pure valve. What is the recommended speakers for this amp using a Rickenbacker 4001, I don´t want to broke my speakers with the Rick gain...so, 8x10" ? 2x15"? 2x18"?

If you have the van or truck to cart a big cabinet in...and a healthy back, go with the 8x10".

10's ... 10's ... and more 10's .... it is hard to go wrong with 10's ... 2x10 ... 4x10 ... 6x10 ... 8x10 ...

I prefer eminence 10's myself ... I use Eminence Beta's in my custom built cabinets ... I run 2 2x10 cabs and mike it with an sm57 into a 6000 watt pa ...

Got to endorse 10's also, but I've been wondering about 12's lately...

But I have a 2x10 Carvin cabinet, and it rocks.

Over the years I've used 18's 15's 12's and 10's. I must agree with the other forumites 10's just do the bizz, especially when you play with a band.

On there own they may not seem quite deep enough, but with a band they are just perfect.

Mine are all Ashdowns.

I used to used nothing but 8X10's live, and you re ally can't go wrong with them. Recently though, I changed to using one 4X10 setup with two active horns, and one 1X15 with two active horns. I still get all the punch of the 10's but I can move way more air at the bottom end with 15. It has much more presence live than the 8X10 alone. If I wanted to run stereo, I have a little more leeway on the sounds I can get.

It's all Trace Elliot gear, but you can buy all the components separately. Here's a picture of my setup with the EQ set totally flat for some reason. I never play like that.

I have to agree that 10"s sound great but I prefer the added kick a 15" gives when used with 10"s. I have a 2x10" and 2-1x15" cabinets currently but any combination would sound great depending on how big you want to go. Just take your head to your favorite store and try out different combinations until you find what suits your need/desire best. Good Luck !

Gareth - a supurb looking rig! I wonder if you have tried reversing the cabs? I've been told you get better sound/projection with the 15" on top. I'm wondering about that... Thanks.

I have Ampeg 10's and Carvin 10's which I like alot, but I just bought an Aguilar GS-112. For its size, volume and tone, the Aguilar is one damn good deal. More details to follow.

Ampeg 8 X 10' cabs will knock over a wall, they are the equivalent in cone area to about (7) 15"s, plus they have a much quicker response than 15"s. I like 15"s also and own some but use my 8 X 10 cabs 99% of the time, I am never sorry and never wish I had something else. (only during load in and load out time) Make sure you get a plywood enclosure if you buy one or two of these. Two are bass heaven.

Derek,

I've never tried reversing the cabs and putting the 15 incher on top. I might give that a try. I really like the cut of the 10's up top though. They punch through any bad stage mix really well, and you can feel the 15 up through the floor.

I use a Peavey 8x10 with my Ampeg V4B.Has 2 channels with separate volumes, for runnin' stereo. Excellent punch! For shows I also use a Traynor Custom Special with matching 2x15 cabinet. My bandmates hate me and my "Wall of sound", as they call it.
