Montreaux - 2003

Post by ozover50 »

This is absolutely, positively not Rick related!!

Caught a 1 hour feature on the 2003 Montreaux festival - what a gas!! I'm an occasional jazz fan (well.... a bit more than occasional) and I couldn't believe the line up and the quality!!

George Benson absolutely flaying his signature Ibanez (I couldn't play a guitar 4 inches thick!).

Natalie Cole left me breathless - I know of her problems and it's been mentioned in a thread here somewhere, but if she was on anything, it only served to produce some amazing vocal gymnastics!

Concord Jazz and Patti Austin were great and the Crusaders just blew me away. More so when Randy Crawford joined them and sang 'Imagine'. Those lovely creamy vocals get me every time! It must be one of the greatest songs ever!!

Just thought I'd share it - gonna start looking for some DVDs now!!

We have a good one here, The Newport Jazz Festival (Newport, Rhode Island) (although some people insist it is now called the JVC Jazz Festival), I am a big jazz fan but have never made it there.
I like the older wilder stuff though, like Coltrane, Monk, Davis, Mingus, McClean etc. it's gotten too sedate for me.

I'm more into fusion and acid these days, Bob.

I stopped taking acid over 30 years ago Howard. I like all acoustic stuff.

Saw that coming, didn't I? I've truthfully never taken it - nothing more than the occasional (very) doobie or bong for me. I know where I can get some stuff if I want it, too - my 16 year old son!!!!

I'm actually a bing fan of Dimeola and Ritenour, among others. They do some really cool acoustic goodies!

Yeah I like the electric guitarists like Wes Montgomery, Hall and Pass, those two you mentioned are too modern for me! No they are both really good. I wouldn't recommend acid, very unpredictable results.

Montgomery was a freak (as a guitar player, that is!).

I would never touch it or any thing like it, Bob. When I say 'I know where I can get some stuff', I'm talking grass - nothing else. Even that no longer appeals to me. I'm strictly an alcohol man these days and I'm at the age where my body tells me when I've had enough of that - I get very tired. I couldn't binge drink like those young whippersnappers of today, even if I wanted to!!
