How To Post Photos

Peter, I know lots of people ask about this so could you put how to do it in the "HELP" section under posting? That way, people who don't know (a.k.a. me) can look there without searching lots of old messages? Thanks. Ben

Ben, the pics cannot exceed 36k, or 500 pixels. I do mine in photoshop & it is easy to adjust the pixel amount & the size of the image, even on the lite version of photoshop. If you have this, then let me know & I will tell you how to do it (the lite version is usually free!). I have no idea on other platforms....

If you look at the side bar under "Posting", you will see "coding". It is in this section you will find what you need to do to post a pic. As was said above, you cannot exceed 36K in memmory or 500 pixels in size. As was also said, you'll need to use an editing program to resize. If you have a digital camera, your program should enable you to do this. Below is the actual instruction (with mod) for posting a pic:

Tag Description

\ image{your pic name}(take the space out between the backslash and image: \image) Upon posting, you are prompted for an image file to upload. Images must be either GIF or JPEG format. Images must be saved on your hard disk. Your browser must support form-based file upload (Netscape Navigator 2.0+ and Internet Explorer 4.0+ support this; IE 3.02 will also work provided that you have installed the file upload patch).

Peter, why not allow us to link to pics that reside elsewhere (e.g., Photobucket) so they come up in the thread? The 36K limit is way too small for any serious gear porn...

That's how they do it at the Boogie Board. I just haven't learned to put the pics on any of those type sites yet.

Patrick, all though I understand your viewpoint, I have to say that I have seen some pretty impressive photos on this forum, so I would argue that once you have learned how to do it, it will work very well.

As for photobucket, check out this thread http://www.rickresource.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=43&post=133897#POST133897
& you will see that this can be done, although you have to 'visit' them.

There is, of course, nothing to stop anyone from posting a link in the post.

I have found, however, that there are some boards and individuals that will post using a "hotlink" function and give no credit to the intial board.

In addition to not giving the other board credit it that board also has to pay for the bandwidth of the download. This is really not fair, at least as I see it.

Tony, my point exactly--consider how much more user-friendly Dale's step-by-step description would be if the photos were posted along with the text here on this site. I mean to take nothing away from Dale's thread, which is monumentally entertaining and informative, but having the pictures show up along with the description would make it even better, IMO.

Peter--if I may--members' linking photos from other websites shouldn't be a concern of yours. Isn't it the responsibility of each poster to credit his source, if the images are not his own? Webmasters of other sites can protect against the use of their own images, as well.

Well, I think it would be an improvement, anyway (insert eye rolling emoticon)...

Patrick: I apologize for not being clearer in my response to you.

To begin, with regard to your improvement suggestion I agree. But Dale is already able to post photos within his text should he want to and does not have to link in the manner he has. He would need to compress his photos to meet the requirements of this forum. I would assist him should he wish to move in that direction anytime he wishes. Dale I'm here for you if you want to make that change.

Further, I am referring to "hotlinking" and not simply posting a photo to this site. With a hotlink it is possible to create an active link to a photo on another site such that it actually appears as if it hosted on this site. The difference is however, photos downloaded from someone else's site pose two problems. First of all, the site in which the photo resides pays for the cost of downloading information, not this site for example. So if several thousand folks download a photo from the hosting site, the owner of that site is going to pay a bill for someone else's benefit - mine and yours. Second, there may be no credit given to the original site hosting the photo. Citing an htm or html file would accomplish this and is far better in my view.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I see nothing objectionable to "hotlinking" photos. If the host of the photo doesn't want others to copy and paste his images, they can be protected.

As for Dale being able to post his pics along with the text, the 36k limit is going to seriously impair the quality of those pics, denting, if not totally defeating, the purpose.

If you want to see how high-quality images improve the content of a bulletin board, check out the Les Paul Forum. The LPF, of course, has an affiliated photo storage site (LilyPix), which charges a small amount to its subscribers, helping to defray the cost of maintaining the LPF. Pretty good idea!

Agreed Patrick. It is all about trying to use the resources you have as best as you can. It has been my preference to keep the cost to visitors at a minimum. Your points are well-taken, however, and definitely food for thought. Thanks for your suggestions and your interesting ideas.
