Fender Electronics

Post by oreca »

Not sure if anyone will have an answer...

I've bid on eBay on a few Fender electronic parts, 2 single coil pickups, the neck pickup is from the 50's reissue and the mid pickup is from the 70's reissue. Also a DH-1 humbucker for the bridge. And I'm getting the switch and pots from a 50's reissue.

Now my question, how much would something like this cost brand new?
I think I'll be paying around 100$ USD for the whole thing. All parts are brand new as far as I know. Did I do good or bad?

the first thing a lot of us Fender players do with a new Fender is replace the pickups ... I put Seymour Duncans in mine ... you can get good quality 250k ohm pots for $3 to $5 many places ...

Patrick you probably paid just a little too much.

As Jeff commented "the first thing a lot of us Fender players do with a new Fender is replace the pickups"

I have I think at last count in excess of ten Strats/custom strats and a couple of nice Squires . Only one of my Strats has original pickups and that is my 71. All the rest have hot rodded pickups in various configurations for various styles of music that I like to play.

Seymour Duncans are a great pickup and so is Lace Sensor. I also like the pickups sold by guitarfetish on e-Bay as well as Mighty Mite makes a good hot Strat pickup set. Its all a matter of taste at the end of the day.

Back to topic for a second. I paid $80.00 CDN for a set of Texas Specials still in their original plastic case a few years back. Mighty Mite Alnico are a better pickup in my books.

Hope my opinion was of some assistance.

By the way guitarfetish sells complete drop in strat pickguard plug and play assemblies from around $49.00 USD. Some have USA Strat hole spacing as well.

Check his stuff out. Its very good.

First off, thanks for the replies Image

At this point I'm getting everything for less, I think I'm looking at 85 instead. I've also took notice alot of people replace their pickups. But I'm looking to put actual Fender pickups...
Brian, I had looked at those sets but since I don't actually have a pickguard on my guitar (it's not a Strat, just similar). I also need a humbucker since it's HSS.
I was looking at a site that said the DH-1 is like $84.99, if that's true I think I'm not doing too bad...

Either way it's too late to back off the pickups, I've already won the auctions except 1, I was just wondering on how I did with the amount of money I'm going to be paying.
I was going to buy them locally but I figured that would've ran me about 150-200 CAD without the pots and switch. I was looking a Stewmac and they had a switch for 21, unbelievable! Hehehe

Good job on the Texas Specials, sounds like a good deal to me!!

Got the Texas Specials from a pawn broker. He did not know if they were the real thing or not. All I did was flip them over and I knew. I told him that I would take a chance on them and struck a deal. He was asking $150.00 CDN

It pays to flirt with the idea of an occasional trip to the local pawn shop circuit.

I always wonder how down and out you would have to be to get rid of your number one guitar to a pawn shop. Occasionly I have managed to buy some real treasures.

That's a place I trust the Lord will never take me. Jeez I almost feel like I need to say Amen after this post.

Good luck with your project.

Amen. Can I get a witness?

That was a great song. Do you know it too?

I loved this line.

"Ah listen everybody
Especially all you girls"

Now that brings back memories.

Sadly pawn shops here never have anything of real interest. My friend spotted a brand new ugly Danelectro that he almost bought, it's been there for years. I guess it has a sparkle finish that kills it.
I spotted a Gibson SG once but it was a left handed.

Thanks, I'll eventually post pictures of what I did to it.
I actually plan on having Paul do some work on the neck. It's funny, I'm putting alot more into this guitar then what it's worth but I don't care!

Don't be so quick to dismiss the power of the pawn shop. My best score... "81 Burg 4003, REALLY nice... had a tag on it for $750, popped in 10 min. before he closed and offered him $500. Pawn shop guys love leaving the store with cash in their pocket.

Like an idiot, I later traded that bass for a Spector. I love my Spector... but what was I thinking?
What do you mean the Bass is too loud???

How about a 1971 Strat for a $100.00 Cdn that I bought 2 years ago. Case included. Original pickups, wiring etc. plus upgraded gold Fender Customshop pickguard and locking tuners.

Also 3 years ago a 1976 Tuxedo 4001 $700.00 Cdn Vintage case included.

Boosey and Hawks silver flute $15.00 Cdn.

I cruise the pawnshops once a month. I wonder why?

Very nice strat, I like how the gold matches with the natural color of the body. Plus the 70's headstock is the best!

Brian are you close to Vancouver? Where are these pawn shops?

The problem here is that it's always the same stuff, people here don't really own nice gear, and if they do they know they won't be selling it at a pawn shop!

I'm pretty confident I've got the only Rickenbacker in Moncton. Not 100% sure, but I've never heard of another one here.

Patrick there are others in Moncton as Steele's Music used to be a dealer for a short time. While folks and instruments may have moved on there is a 4001V63 in Moncton and a 360/12 in a closet, there as well. So by my count there are three Rickenbackers in Moncton, a Model 1997 in Jetglo was also purchased there but now resides outside of Fredericton.

Patrick,

Yeh the 70's headstocks are cool. They are not the best Strats in terms of quality but the have a certain appeal.

This Strat has very glassy but smooth pickups. They also pack a punch. It is perfect for SRV & JMH songs. I had to do a lot cosmetic and set up work on the guitar but as you can see it was worth the time invested.

The Texas pickups came from Surrey BC and the Strat I picked up in Kelowna BC and the 4001 in Vernon BC. Oh and the flute came from Rutland B.C.

I mostly look around in the Okanagan now. We have a number of small towns and cities within close proximity. Many many musicians reside in the Okanagan.

My experience is similar to yours with pawn shops. Most of the time they have nothing but junk. But every once in a while you can strike gold.

Good hunting!
