The Dave Clark Five

Post by bassman »

These guys were one of my favourtie bands during the 60's. They created so many great tunes with "Because" being one of my all time favourite songs. It definately qualifies for Peter's thread of a couple of weeks ago titled "Signature Introduction to Classics".

I loved the sound that Dave Clark got out of his Roger's kit. With a incredible snare drum sound that was unique to him alone (or so it seemed).

Mike Smith's vocals and Vox Continental Organ sound were as uniquely identifiable on all their records just as Dave's drumming style and sound was. Mike was the voice of the group, and he did a outstanding job of it.

How does everyone else feel about DC-5?

PS - I read this week that Paul Schaefer is holding a benefit concert in New York for Mike Smith. Mike fell off the roof of his home in the UK a year or two ago and was left paralized.
Very tragic.

For sake of clarity JON it was his home in Spain but sad indeed and there did appear to be some fallout with the people who ran his website and fanclub who thought they were doing their best for him but seems some issues with his wife, who's right etc not for me to say as i don't know, except they issued some joint statement and then seemed to sell off everything they had to do with DC5.

Because was great I agree but it was only a "B" side here in UK when in my view it was a far stronger song than "Can't You See That She's Mine"

Rumours have abounded for a long time that Clark never actually played on most recorded tracks.

A Peter & Gordon reunion is in the offing, in support of Dave Clark Five frontman Mike Smith. The British folk-rock duo will be getting back together for their first performance in more than 35 years at the "England Swings" tribute concerts. "The Late Show with David Letterman" band leader Paul Shaffer is organizing the event to raise money for Smith, who was critically injured in a fall at his home in Spain nearly two years ago. Former Wings and Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine, the Zombies, Billy J. Kramer, and Beatles cover band the Fab Faux are among the other artists taking part in the shows. Two concerts are scheduled for B.B. King's Blues Club in New York on August 2nd, while eBay will host a ten-day fundraising auction, featuring autographed rock memorabilia and concert tickets, starting July 31st.

DAVE CLARK FIVE's frontman MIKE SMITH has been told he'll never walk again - following an accident in 2003 which left him paralysed from the waist down.

The BITS AND PIECES singer broke his neck in a fall from a fence at his former house in Spain.

He moved back to his native Britain after the injury and has spent the last two years in a London hospital, where he's on a ventilator to assist his breathing because of lung damage he sustained from the accident.

And doctors have now told the 61-year-old his legs will never work again.

I saw him(them) in Long Beach, CA in 1965 after we got shut out on tickets for The Beatles.

Just a strange observation of sorts. Back in those days if you notice, all the cool guys stood the same way. Legs wide apart knees slightly flexed.

John Lennon's stance was the same. Yikes even Tom Jones (not one of my favourites)stood like that too. Too bad about Mike Smith. Great singer in his day.

I'd Love to be at that concert! For Mike and the sheer nostalgic quality I would anticipate.

Mike Smith took care of his fans for many years and I am hoping that they will be able to return the favour following this tragedy. In spite of these most trying times, it is good to see that he has been able to come home. The best of luck to you and your family Mike.

The Dave Clark Five was the 1st LP I ever bought (1964)I bought it instead of Meet The Beatles or The Beatles 2nd Album because I liked the cover Photo(you could see their boots really well.My grandfather was a tailer who specialized in custom shirts so I had him make me a DC5 shirt to go with my black jacket white slacks and Beatle boots.I was the envy of all my friends in 5th grade. Is their movie "Catch Us if You Can" on DVD yet?I think that the same company that made Beatle Dolls also made Dave Clark Five Dolls.Anyo hear have a set of those?

HAVING A WILD WEEKEND (a.k.a. CATCH US IF YOU CAN) 1965
U.K. film. The Dave Clark Five play movie stunt men. They flee swingin' 60s London with a fashion model for some peace and quite and end up with anything but! They even meet hippies who smoke marijuana. Songs include "Catch Us If You Can," "I Can't Stand It," "Having A Wild Weekend," and "Sweet Memories." The Dave Clark Five, Barbara Ferris, David Lodge, Robin Bailey, Yootha Joyce, David de Keyser. Bonus Selection: Dave Clark Five song hits.

Officially it is not but unofficially it is. Should you be interested contact me offlist and I'll point you in right direction

Now the Dave Clark Five were an overrated band. The Who I rated very highly but I never really understood the appeal of the DC5. The best thing about them was Mike Smith's voice.

Welcome Tim

We may agree on one band but we'll have to disagree on DC5, I quite liked them especially on ballads, as you MS had a great voice.

Mitch - Yes it's $29 at The Video Beat. Here is the link:

Nobody on this thread should search through all the classics they have available. You will go blind, sell the house, wife, kids, etc.

I warned you!

I don't think the DC5 were actually anymore overrated than some may think of the Who. The bands were really from two different genres. One was more pop influenced, the other more rock.

Perhaps they should have been called 'Mike Smith and the Dave Clark Four'.
