What kind of wings do I have?

Post by marc61 »

This is the 4000 I got on Ebay. I can't take more photos because I just moved and lost my digital camera battery charger.

Anyway, he sold it to me as mid-80's but, the serial number is OI, which should be 1975. Bass is in much better condition than I thought. There's some rub off on the back of the neck and on the back top, but no buckle rash. Plays like butter.

I'm sending it to Mike Dolan to be refinished and I'd like to give it a CS look but, with one pickup. Problem is I can't get walnut wings unless they be there already. Suggestions?

That's a nice looker! Image I'd leave it the way it is.

I agree. Refins are never as good as the beautiful factory ones. Not to mention what it does to the resale value....I'd leave it as is, it's SWEET!!

I know, it's just this idea I have in my head and I have to bring it to life...

My apologies to the purists...

Looks great Marc, congratulations on the score, specially that it's in better condition than you thought.

Fireglo ... lots of life there !!!

It won't have walnut wings but you could have Ted put walnut wings on it before the refin to...Jetglo!

I was going to suggest the same as Jeff ,or as long as its solid color your painting it Dolan, could probably stain the sanded down wings as long as the stain is fairly dark plus take measurements from a v63 or so.

Something about classic Jetglo...coupled with that uncut pickguard...that's a good looking bass Marc.

I know, I was really looking for more of a beater. The awesome thing about it it the playability. Justifies my theory that when the wear on the instrument is obvious play wear as opposed to knock around scratches, chips and so forth, it usually means it's a great player.

Just wondering if there's any way other than the jack plate to verify if it's a 75. It's always possible the jack plate was changes although nothing about the bass seems non-original at this point.

A couple of other items of note. The truss cover is screened, not raised letters, the pots are numbered 1377647 LM4124. Each pot has the same two numbers.

Where's Ray? He's usually good with this stuff.
