I was recording with the band this weekend and got the chance to record a couple of songs with an old V-4b 100W head into a 2x15 vintage yamaha cab.
I was sold on tube after playing a Traynor Yba200, but I fell in love with a V-4b today. So gritty sounding... brought my bass alive to the point where I was almost floored. Everyone thought my ric sounded killer.
I have a 96 ric and played the amp for a day... took a bit of gettign used to (I now truly understand what people mean when they say that tube amps really respond to your playing/attack). You can get away with a lot using solid state and it all sounds roughly the same... but with tube small things get picked up. I love it... and it really helped my playing. How I attack the strings with my fingers means so much more now.
Anyway... there was a v-4bh on a clearance sale in a local music store so I plan on gettign it tomorrow if it is still around (it was 2 weeks ago).
My ric and an ampeg v-4bh

one thing... this was an older v-4b (not sure the year but I guess 70's based on the ,ed/high/low switches), but I was using the low gain input and I found that I would begin to get overdrive once the amp was cranked to about 40-50% (still very loud). is that normal? My eq was 12 low, with mid boost and a little treble boost also.
