I was able to ask him about that recently. The Rick was a temporary replacement while his other basses (the Ripper and a white Precision) were in for repairs. It seems that he found the Rick to be highly unsuitable. I believe he later switched to a Gibson T-bird.

Here is a link to some pics of AC/DC in the studio and on a late '70's live gig. I believe it is George Young playing the 4001 bass. Cool pic of the Young bros. at the piano with the Rick in the bkg. http://www.rockphotograph.com/bands-acdc.shtml

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Angus uses that 335 for non-AC/DC appearances, sitting in w/ other groups (something that he rarely does), etc. I'm pretty sure he used it when he and Malcom joined the Stones onstage in Toronto last year or the year before.
Looks like Malcom's playing a Strat in one of those pics...

I've been a fan of Mark Evans ever since I saw him with AC/DC on "Countdown" here in Australia in 1975.
He did have a red sunburst Gibson Ripper, which he lent to someone and never saw again. He also used a white Fender Precision and a Gibson Thunderbird.
In 1976 I bought a (now) very rare Dirty Deeds songbook, which I still have, minus the cover.
Here is a photo of Mark with the Rickenbacker 4001 from the book. Trivia buffs - note the Aussie made Eminar amp head behind him:-

Great pic Darren! Only the second I've seen of M.E. with a Rick.
I understand that Mark is a bit of a vintage guitar dealer when he's not playing w/ Dave Tice? I wonder if he still has any information (serial#, etc.) about that fretted sunburst Ripper. I believe it was a '75 model. They are not that commonplace...probably the rarest of the Ripper basses outside of prototypes.
