Another string question
Just found this forum....thanks for the great info. An enthusiastic yet very civil bunch of Ric nuts ....it's a pleasure to read the threads. My question is this: I'm considering buying a 325/12V63 that I've come across but I need to know......because it's a short scale, what strings work/sound best? I've read that on the 6 string model, the heavier the strings, the better likelihood that the guitar will stay in tune (better tone , also). I haven't seen any 12 string sets made by Rickenbacker or Pyramid that address that issue (or is it still an issue...being a 12 string). Your comments will certainly help me decide whether to purchase it or instead, look for the 350/12V63 model. Thanks in advance! Duane
Duane: A great question. As this is a short scale instrument, you will need the heavier gauge strings in order to have the instrument intonate properly. I have consulted with the factory on this one and I understand that a special string order was required. The 325/12s were strung with sets in which the main string gauges were 12 16 24Wound 32 42 54 the octave string gauges being 12 16 12 16 24Wound 32.
If you have never played a 325 or 325/12 before, it would be essential that you spend some time comparing it with the 350/12s. There is not a lot of room on the fretboard of the 325/12s. As you know, Lennon did not use his very much at all. I expect we will hear from owners of the 325/12 who will give us their view. My personal choice, for overall comfort and playability, would be the 350/12.
