Anyone using a Ric for Motown/Staxx stuff???

Post by tayste_2000 »

I'm trying to use my Ric for more styles of music and it got me thinking would't this be a great bass for motown and staxx hits because those guys all used vintage P basses which are just a vintage single coil in the middle of the body. My 4003 has a single coil in the middle of the body and the pickup cover so wouldn't this be a great bass for motown?

I have been wondering the same thing. I am gonna try and take it to our Big Band Jazz rehersals next week.

I have a '76 3000 bass with Pyramid Gold flatwounds on it and a new 4004 pickup(the original was long gone when I got it). It sounds great on all that 60's stuff and especially Reggae when played without a pick. But the flatwounds are the key I think.

Dane has nailed the situation perfectly with his post. Flatwounds ARE the key, no doubt about it. I get a perfectly acceptable tone from my '92 4003 using Pyramid Gold flatwounds, with the pick-up tone controls turned completely down. Try this and I think you'll agree that it works very well.

Hear! Hear!
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

I play nothing but James Brown (late 60s-early 70s era) with my 4003S, fingerstyle. Not quite Motown but not where you'd usually find a Rickenbacker, either.

I used to use my 4001 in my high school jazz band.
I'd play Count basie, Glen Miller and Benny Goodman with it. I used it with a B-15 and it filled the bass gap perfectly, with round wound strings!!!

as we all know.. James Jamerson and Duck Dunne used p basses when they recorded all those classic gems.. however the ric bass does a very nice job filling the bill. If you need proof check out "Standing in ther shadows of motown" and also "What Duck Dunne" and play along with the included cds and you tell me what you think?
