Curmudge: I have a friend who has just purchased a Godin Montreal that we have discussed before.
It does not have a pickguard and he is wondering if there is a clear pickguard material that he would put on this instrument that would not ruin the finish should he want it remove or replace at some point.
I guess I am asking if there are some adhesives that could hold a clear guard on his instrument that would not damage the finish?

Stew-Mac #3419. It's a .005" thick, self-adhesive mylar sheet that can be cut with a scissors. It can be easily peeled off with a bit of warming from a hair dryer. $US13 for 4 sheets.
Staples and other office supply stores also sell mylar laminating sheets which are not specifically for guitars, but will do the same job.
To put the guard on bubble-free, first spray the back of the mylar guard with some windex. Apply the guard, slide it into exact position, and squeegee it into place with a sponge, working from the center to the outside edges.. Use a soft cloth to absorb the water from the edges. Let dry overnight.

Thanks Paul. Just to confirm, as he will ask, is it safe to assume that this adhesive will have no adverse effects on the finish?

Peter, I doubt that the Godins have a nitrocellulose finish, and I suspect they are polyester or urethane clearcoated. You should be OK in either case. Perhaps a call or e-mail to Godin regarding their finishes, is in order to be 100% safe.
