Playing Style and 660/12 vs 370/12 Models

Post by steve350v63 »

MARK,
I am thinking of purchasing either a RIC 660/12 or a 370/12. I am a rythmn guitar player in a band that plays 60's and 70's music. I sometimes play riffs that my lead guitarist can not.
My hands are not that big. I own a 350v63 and I love the sound and feel of this guitar.
I am looking for the same but in a 12 string.
I am leaning towards the 370/12. I am also looking into having the 12 saddle bridge installed. My questions to you are:
What are your opinions based on my playing needs,
on the 660/12 vs 370/12?
And, if I choose the 370/12 is it just enough to change the bridge or should I have the nut changed as well? Thanks, Steve

Lots of personal preference points to think about.

The 660-12 is a wider neck than the 330,360 or 370/12 string. The neck of a 300 series is as wide as a Fender Tele or Strat. But with the binding, and the inset of the outside string, the spacing is actually narrower than Fender's six string guitars.

I change these guitars nut to spread the strings out to give a fretting area that is maximized. WHY? because I get asked for this on a continuous basis. I NEVER get asked to return it to narrow stock spacing . EVER!!

This is for people of any size. Although I never did any work for Billy Varty. I'll bet he is one of the few that loved stock spacing.

The string spacing on a 660-12 is nearly the same as what I put on a 300 series guitar. It works just fine. You may look at the comments from people that I have had this work done.

I just got done adjusting two 660-12s ..and those guitars had their nut replaced with WIDER string spacing. The owner of the metallic blue 660-12 was stunned at the difference. I am waiting for him to post something about it.

What other brands of guitars do you have?

What is comfortable to you?

The current production of Ricks seems to have 'added' wood to the shoulder arera of the back of the neck.

The thickness is the same, but it appears that area behind the 5th and the 2nd strings is bulkier than I recall it in the past. This results in a difference in feel. I have a 370-12, a 360-12V64 , a 330-12, and a 360-12 that have all been made within the last two years currently in the shop . ALL of them have this type of neck. I would suggest you try any 300 series guitar to get a feel for the current neck.

The Carl Wilson series did NOT have this neck. So it is not a question of do they all have this neck.

Ask the guys that have had the mod done by me. I think doing the nut and the bridge is THE way to go. I have done this for people one step at a time. They end up having both done .

I recommend a 12 saddle bridge.

Thanks for your questions.

Mark, thank you for your comments. If I were to get this 370/12 would you be able to make the nut and the bridge modifications for me?
I would need to know the cost and time it would take and when you could get to it. Is there a way for us to talk live about this? Thanks again for your help. Steve
