Toasters; to rewind,or...?
So I have a pair of pre scatterwound toasters
in a 360- 6 .I'm not nuts about the sound.Should I ,a]sell them and buy scatterwounds
b]get them unwound to 7.4 spec
c]completely rewind them[kind of the main idea I have ,as they are pretty microphonic]
Cost effective wise, and soundwise, what are your opinions on this?

Like me for instance! Those hotter toasters are wonderful pickups & they seem to be getting scarcer all the time because of the rampant practise of unwinding. It seems a shame to ruin perfectly good pickups Don, when the ones you want are freely available.
However....you mention them as being microphonic, so the chances are that there is something wrong with them anyway, so they could be candidates for rewinding!

'Rickenbacker'...what a name! After all these years, it still thrills me.

Nobody asked if you've auditioned scatterwounds and ARE nuts about the way that they sound. So I'm gonna assume you have and you are, so I'd say buy new and save yourself a lot of grief.

My toasters are unwound '92's and they sound great to me. Well, "soundED" anyway - one broke somehow. Anyway, I'm just going to buy 2 new scatterwounds as replacements and get the broken one fixed someday.
Mostly because I don't want to have my guitar disassembled for as long as it'd take to send the broken one out for rewinding.

So, OK, how much do I charge anyone for perfectly good[but bad sounding-to me] new condition toasters? Not a scratch on them.FWIW, if I recall, I originally got them new somewhere between '93-'96?
But if anyone wanted to swap me even up for scatterwounds, hey, I'd do it.
Not a big priority for me to do, but because of the PUs , I rarely ever play this guitar[no, It's not for sale!]With good PUs, I just might start using it.

So what's the Best price on new scatterwounds?
And how much to charge for the ones I have[bought new in mid 90s, perfect cond].
I probably would never try unwinding them myself cause I have neither the time, patience, or eyesight to do it.Or quiet time around the house .
So it's rewind, swap, or sell and buy new.

One last comment; maybe I'm being harsh saying they "sound Bad".Bad, would be subjective; any of you guys might disagree. How 'bout,"don't wind my binder they way I think they should"?
FWIW, I Did have a non scatterwound on my late 80s V63 bass in the neck, and, for that, I think they are fine. But for bridge on 6 or 12? No way...
