'60s STYLE!

I couldn't resist this...the '60 Capri and the '65 Magnatone M10 arrived within a week of each other.

So I posed them together, right after I played them together. The M10, newly serviced, is the best-sounding small amp I've ever heard. Stylish as hell, too, if you like that mid-sixties vibe.

This amp has genuine vibrato, for those of you who haven't heard one. It actually varies the pitch of the note being played for a wild, unforgettable sound. Also a sweet, shimmering reverb.

Hard to believe those photos were taken in 2005!! They look like someone got some new toys in '65.

Wow! I think I like those Capris more than the larger bodied guitars! And that Magnatone looks brand-spankin' new

Looks like a couple of clean machines to me! I'd definitely go for that Capri, but I never could dig any kind of Ric amp designs at all. JMO on those.

Don't get me wrong - I really LOVE a lot of '50's, '60's, '70's design vibes (Kustom amps anyone?). But some of those Ric designs look like the old "Close'N'Play" portable record players to me.

On the other hand, if it sounds good, then that's al that matters. Plus, it looks brand new too!

I take it that the Capri is the instrument you bought instead of bidding on the V64 that I ultimately bought a few weeks back. I think that you made a very good choice if that was indeed the case. You also made me very happy at the same time. LOL

Hey, Aitch, one of my closest friends has a Hawk. It hasn't run in a couple of decades but he still has it planted on his property out in the country.

I love Golden Hawks, but I'm crazy on Avantis (One of the design team was a friend of mine; recently passed away...). One of the few cars I've wanted, but never got around to owning. Talked my ex-father-in-law into buying three new Avantis, though...

Steve, the amp is not a Rickenbacker M10, but a Magnatone M10. Sort of a vintage '60s legend, and an amp design landmark. It actually has a credit tag on the control panel that says "Industrial design by..." with the name of a long-defunct design firm.

It's assembled like no other amp, either. Maybe I'll do a feature sometime. Suffice to say that it's a sealed back wth no obvious ways to get the darned thing open.

Stan, I haven't measured the body width but I'd have to say right around 16". I'll check it and report back...

Avantis were some beautiful cars...my father-in-law was stationed at Ft. Richardson, Alaska in the early '60's...he had a friend who had one. Imagine motoring around Anchorage in '63 in an Avanti....that's livin', baby...

Paul, did/does the company who made the Magnatone amp also at one time make large reel-to-reel machines called Magnacorders? If so, I used to use those old clunkers when I first got into radio back in the '60s. I bet those things weighed a couple of hundred pounds.
