Bruce Foxton and the TONE!

Post by Walker »

I was always impressed with the tone of Bruce Foxton. Since I am in Texas, I will ask if any of you ever saw the Jam live? Did BF really play his RIC through a Marshall? I play a 75 RIC 4001 and an SVT. I also use a Vox distortion pedal for that ENSTWHISTLE tone every once and awhile. Thanks for helping me get the tone I want. NO ONE around here knows who the JAM are!

Walker: I am not "Jam" expert, however, in collecting Bruce Foxton photos, and talking to others who focus on his music, my understanding is that he used Rotosound Strings and a Marshall 100 Watt Bass Amplifier. Word also has it that he has used up to four speaker cabinets (each comprised of four 12" speakers) depending on the size of the gig. I do not know what amp head he may have used for four cabinets but I am sure others will add to this list. Now do you suppose that his Rickenbacker bass and this gear would move rooms? Good luck with you next equipment purchase.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Bruce used many different marshall amp and bass setups. Actually, after around '79 he switched to using Fender P-Basses (yuk!) mostly in the studio. From being a Rick bass player and Jam fan for nearly 20 years all I can say is he played LOUD. Get a 4001, crank it up with a good tube amp and you'll have THE tone.
