'83 4001

Post by imnoone »

Hi again all. In addition to a 1980 4003, I'm looking at this 1983 4001: http://www.leedavila.com/1983.jpg The owner says that the bridge pickup might be bad (I have an SD replacement) and it has one replaced tuner. If it's in OK shape and plays well, what might be a fair price?

im not a ric expert, but the switch doesn't look original and there has been a thumbrest in the body. And the bridge saddle for the E string is missing.
I don't know if there were any 4001 build in '83?

Ah, thanks for the sharp eyes, gents. He's claiming 1983 based on the serial number WD515. $700 is actually what the guy is asking (no case). I didn't realize that it had switch and saddle issues to boot. I guess I'll keep looking.

Though none were actually made that late, some 4001s bear serial numbers from as late as '86. The reasons for this are confusing.

The reasoning I read was that the basses were "left-overs", and maybe the serial number was only determined when the instrument was sold. So it may have been sold in 83, had an 83 serial #, but was probably among the last 4001's built, possibly in 1981...

Ed: I made that same statement once about how it appears that the serial numbers were assigned at the time the instrument was sold and not when it was made. JH did not agree with me. Somewhere in my mail folders I have an e-mail from him where he enlightened me. I will read it over and paraphrase the pertinent facts.

I will have an 87 4003JG for sale in the 800 dollar range as soon as I get the 4-2-5 Fireglo sent off to Jeff, and get it back. Great Player. A few little knicks(hidden by a Sharpie!) and fine scratches but no major finish issues.

I played Charley's 4003 Jetglo, it was very nice, even with the flatwounds that he had on it.
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS! :-)
