Pyramid flats vs T.I. flats

Post by gt76 »

I'm currently using Pyramid Gold flats on my V63 and D'Addario chromes (I've also used Fender, I think they're 6050's) on my '76 4001. I've been thinking of trying the Thomastik-Infeld flats but would like some opinions from those of you that have tried the Pyramids and the Thomastiks as to the sound difference and the feel. I'm guessing, from what I've heard, that the T.I.'s are lower tension and would effect the overall feel of the bass. The Pyramids and D'Addario's, although different in sound, have a fairly similiar feel to them with the Pyramids having more of a "thump" to their sound. Thanks in advance for your input.

Just to clarify, it's a 4001V63.

Gary-- The feel of the Pyramids is definitely smoother to my touch. I haven't played my Thomastik-Infelds enough yet to give an informed opinion on tone versus the Pyramids, but I do like them. At this point I would give the Pyramids the overall edge as my favorite, but just barely. I plan to continue using both and would strongly recommend either to anyone curious to try them.

Jeffery, thanks for the input. Once you get a bit more time on the Thomastiks let me know what your opinions are on tone difference compared to the Pyramids.

I use the D'Addario Chromes on a Music Man String Ray that I have. They are nice strings
I recently went back to playing a Rickenbacker bass. Its like meeting an old friend again

The Thomastiks sound/feel similar to the D'Addario chromes. They are great sounding strings the Thomastiks but they are just to floppy for my ric4003..they played nice on my warwick but i had to jack the action up pretty high on my 4003. The other problem i have with the TI's is that it was all to easy for me to bend the notes right out of tune and they were also a pain trying strobe tune them. Other then that they sound great but i was unable to get the sort of lows i like. I have the D'Addario chromes on my bass now but think i'll put the Pyramid flats back on my ric.
