when and why was the 1 5/8 nut width of the 4001 not carried over to the 4003 model(1 11/16)?

my guess would be this was part of the strengthening of the 4003 neck ...

Now I know why my new Ric nut was too wide for my 75 4001. Good thing to know, take care of those old 4001 nuts!
