Big deal.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Someone (maybe this guy?) posted about this on the Dudepit...my impression is that the 4001/3 bridge isn't really designed well enough to handle that sort of pounding regularly.

But what do I know?

I have a dvd of Gov't Mule where Les Claypool is slapping on a Ric 4001. I think from a Ric from '72 of '73.

I'm seriously impressed with Stanley Clarke playing that upright...that is cool!

slapping is a basic skill that is good to have in your tool box as a bass player ... along with picking, tapping, and various other ways of playing ...

That Stanley Clarke video is unbelievable. He plays it as easily as if it were an electric.

I'm impressed with anyone who can slap. It's not something that I have any use for though. I've tried learning but I grow bored with it fairly quickly. Or maybe my brain can't find the connection with my thumb and fingers..... Who can say.
What d'ya mean... the bass is TOO loud!

Talk about being intimate with your instrument!! I was totally impressed, but his fast runs up/down the length of the fretboard (sans frets) was spectacular for being spot on.

Re slapping: I play Chili Peppers' "Higher Ground" daily, slapping almost all the way through. Oh yeah, on a Rick of course (thought that part was obvious!)

Re Stanley Clarke: I'm always impressed no matter what he plays! It's not really my style, but what an awesome talent! The greatest talents always make playing anything look effortless.

Stan's got some strong fingers. Quite a bit of endurance also.
