A copy of my post in 'RAMPANT RECORDING TECHNIQUES'. If anyone is interested, then please keep an eye on this topic, as updates will be posted there, to avoid double posting.....

Sorry I haven't been on the ball with this, but I've just had a week of intense work!

OK....some thoughts on how to proceed....

I hear about glass mastering, sampling rates, printed booklets, mastering etc....but reality is that IMO, the demand for these CD's will be between 40-100 copies! Normally, manufactured CD's, which offer some of the above sevices start at around 500 copies (some offer 300), but at a price that would make this project a non starter, unless anyone knows of a way of getting rid of the surplus copies. For the first forum CD, I would suggest a more modest approach, with a firm eye on quality of package, that will not let the forum, or Rickenbacker down.

I suggest that anyone interested should submit a maximum of two songs (to offer a choice), on CD format, via post to Gary, or myself (I will email Gary & suss out the go between idea).
They should be played primarily by Rickenbacker instruments & should contain no vulgar language, or potentially offensive content within the lyrics. They should be to a fairly decent standard of recording, (not too much hiss - no calling up the stairs that dinners ready etc!) but not neccesserily professionaly produced...recorded in the bedroom is fine. Notes should be attached explaining instruments used & basic recording set up.

If there are more entries than can comfortably fit on a CD (I am thinking along the lines of 16), then I will have to choose which will have to wait for volume 2.

I will semi - master the CD, trying to balance levels, apply EQ/enhancement/width etc & produce a quantity of CDR's. I will produce artwork, which Peter will approve (we will also check with John Hall) & print it to a decent standard via computer. I have produced many short run CD's this way & the results have been superb (better printing than shop bought in many cases) & have also produced CD artwork for many manufactured albums....so I am not entirely without experience in this matter.

Doing it this way will provide us with a super quality product, which will not cost a fortune & will test the water for volume 2. As far as cost goes, the CD's will sell for what they cost me....basicaly, the item cost + some ink & paper costs.

If this is agreed, then we will work out submission dates (perhaps untill the end of June) & then availability date (end of July?)

Where do I send my CD?
I took on the unenviable task of assembling/semi-mastering a disc last year for the Gibson group over at the Dudepit. Came out really well.

The recordings I will submit only have RIC basses on them, as I have no control over the guy in the other corner with the skinny strings! I hope that is okay with you.

Unfortunately, for this first album, it is best to stear clear of cover songs....the copyright issues would make it too difficult. I would then have to fill out MCPS forms & pay royalties & then hope that there were no objections from the copyright holders.

Just bass?....I would suggest that a song is chosen that features the bass, as in a bass solo, or a prominent bass line.

BTW Gary...I sent you an email...did you get it?

I've got several songs that are entirely done on RICs (360, 360-12, and 4003).

I also just recorded guitar parts on a new song this week that included my new 730-12L. Song isn't done yet, but might be by July.
