"Soldier of Love" from BBC

Post by eggman »

Howdy,

In the Spring of 1982 I recorded "Soldier of Love" when my local radio station aired a programme called "Beatles at the BEEB". These were recordings from the Beatles Saturday morning radio shows on the BBC. Some of these were great, others not so great.
One number which jumped out was introduced by George: "Here's John shouting Soldiers of luv". I listened and was instantly knocked out by thier arrangement and performance! Why this one wasn't recorded properly and released I'll never know!
Fantastic vocals by John with typically good support vocals from Pauly and George. This one captured some Beatles magic for me. Anyone else like this one?

Eggman
PS: In a virtual dead-heat with this one is the BBC recording of "Sweet Little 16". Powerful!

Yes that is a great one and other people have wondered the same thing. Those BBC sessions are available now.

Aren't these the same BBC sessions that have been on vinyl for a long time? .... I have the whole (24 record?) "Beatles At The Beeb" set. (the 2-lp album of the same name was just a subset of that larger collection).

I agree that this material is THE BEST.

Ronn's OUCH! band is sure an interesting concept... a band that is a tribute to a band that was a (weird) tribute to begin with.

It got me thinking about the Beatles at the BBC and I figure that a REALLY COOL setlist for a band would be to simply cover the songs that the Beatles covered on the BBC radio shows.... all non Lennon/McCartney so it's really not a Beatles set at all.....

A Picture Of You
A Shot Of Rythm And Blues
A Taste Of Honey
Baby It's You
Beautiful Dreamer
Besame Mucho
Boys
Chains
Clarabella
Cry, Waiting, Hoping
Devil In My Heart
Dizzy Miss Lizzy
Don't Ever Change
Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby
Hello Little Girl
The Hippy Hippy Shake
Honey Don't
The Honeymoon Song
I Got A Woman
I Got To Find My Baby
I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry Over You
Johnny B. Goode
Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey
Keep Your Hands Off My Baby
Lend Me Your Comb
Lonesome Tears In My Eyes
Long Tall Sally
Lucille
Matchbox
Memphis, Tennessee
Misery
Nothin' Shakin'
Ooh! My Soul
Please Mr. Postman
Rock And Roll Music
Roll Over Beethoven
So How Come No One Loves Me
Soldier Of Love
Some Other Guy
Sure To Fall
Three Cool Cats
Till There Was You
That's All Right (Mama)
To Know Her Is To Love Her
Too Much Monkey Business
Twist And Shout
Sheila
Sweet Little Sixteen
You Really Got A Hold On Me
Young Blood

Maybe the Eggmen/OUCH band wants to morph themselves into yet another band? They could call themselves "The BeeBeeSees".

Marshall Crenshaw did a pretty good version of S.O.L. in the '80's, sounding quite Lennon-like.

Should you ever get a chance to see the Beatles clone band "The Return" live (they play all over) - They're great! at a couple of gigs, they have done a set of nothing but BBC/Cavern songs, and it was phenomenal.
Ka is a wheel.

The ReTurn

They are good.... I wish I could be in a band that could do half of the stuff they do. But having said that, and now that I've had a chance to listen to their clips, I'll put my *overly critical cap* on....

The mix is bad... vocals too loud compared to the instruments. But even more than that they seem to be adding a vocal effects (reverb? echo? flange? .. i dunno) that would not be bad except that they are trying to cop the original sound so it is a big negative. Maybe what I'm hearing is just a result of the recoding process? Again, I dunno. But it seems to me that just some technical/mix tweeks could make them sound a lot more like the original.

Also I think that the should all take some "prellies" before their next gig. As technically good as they are they just seem to be lacking that OOMPH... that extra excitement and energy that would make it sound more like the real thing. There is a tameness that these guys need to shake off if they really want to excite the crowd.

Still... "The ReTurn" is pretty damned good. I see that they do these BBC/Cavern songs, and that is MUCH to their credit (I'd love if they put more clips on their site, especially Some Other Guy which I've always thought is a very under-rated basic rock song) :

I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry
Twist & Shout
I Got A Woman
Hippy Hippy Shake
Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey!
Leave My Kitten Alone
Till There Was You
Some Other Guy
Rock And Roll Music
Please Mr. Postman
Lucille
Matchbox

Kris.. you saw them live?... am I way off base here?

I think you are right Kent, They are very good But sounds to laid back. Lacking the oomph or ferocity if you will of the Early Beatles ala Hamburg/Cavern days. "Prellies" the missing ingredient LOL!! This would be The Beatles without the prellies.

ya.... I dont want to beat up on that band because they have done a good job in recreating the whole thing, but I'm also glad that it's not just me who hears that ... "laid back" is a good way to put it. The early Beatles were CERTAINLY not laid back. Now that The ReTurn has gotten this far I wonder if adding that extra energy would be a relatively easy thing for them to do ... or whether its something that is IMPOSSIBLE for them to do.

yup, prellies might be just what they need. Better living through advanced pharmaceuticals.

Hi All
In reply to this Topic,"Soldier of Love" is a class song and a lot of the bands who play at The Annual Beatles Convention play that one.

Also Kris and Kent you talk of The Return they are in my view about the finest Beatles Tribute Band I have seen. I met them after a performance in Liverpool a few years ago and have exchanged the occasional e-mail with one of the members ever since.

Watching them live is just almost like playing The Hollywood Bowl Album or watching a DVD of The Edd Sullivan Shows.

Hi Martin... I'd sure love to see them. I had a similar experience with (then called) "1964 As The Beatles" in Concord NH in 1987. It was in an old theater and the crowd was doing their part too... all you had to do was squint your eyes a bit and you were THERE. great stuff.

However I still stick by what I said about those particular clips that The ReTurn has on their site.
