Polish and silicone

Post by gary_birkholz »

Is there a way to check if there is silicone in a polish before using it ???? And what are some good polishes ? I have been lurking for a long time , and reading the troubles with silicone and am concerned .

Maybe Mr.Hall would know this or a chemist that frequents this group .

Mr. Hall said in a post somewhere here in the forum that he uses/recommends a 50/50 mix of Turtlewax Liquid Pastewax and water.

Another poster (I don't remember his name) recommended Virtuoso Premium Cleaner & Premium Polish. {http://www.virtuosopolish.com/} I had never heard of this stuff and decided to order a bottle of each. It's pretty expensive ($10 for each bottle, and $5 shipping), but it works great and I'm glad I tried it. HOWEVER, this stuff should NOT be used on ANY type of unfinished wood. It is best used on NITROCELLULOSE finishes.

I really don't know if the Turtlewax Liquid Pastewax contains silicone.

The liquid Turtle Wax (White top, not yellow) does not contain silicone and works great. We use it here in the shop. It's about $3.69 at the discount auto supply so it's cheap too. I've yet to see anything work better at any price.

Thanks for that inside info .... but that is only half the answer to my question ......

Is there a way to check for silicone ??

I have lots of car polishes and guitar polishes and furniture polishes ... many I would like to throw away ... but if I could tell the answer to the question ...I'd sure let people know they were doing more bad than good with their polish .
