Rush Replay DVD?

Post by vito »

Hey all,

Anyone have an opinion of the new DVD set? Any easter eggs found? Mine came in the mail, but other than briefly looking through the booklets, I haven't had time to explore.

Just got mine too - still has the wrapper on it. All I'm really interested in is the Exit Stage Left portion.

Just got it, ripped it open, and am listening to the Grace Under Pressure disc now. Ahhh....hearing the "Fear" trilogy live is VERY nice. Image

Grrrrrr....seeing the "Show of Hands" DVD reminds me of why I started not liking them in the 80's. Sometimes I think it is a miracle they made it thru that decade! Fashion-challenged and all, Alex's "Flock of Seagulls" haircut was, in retrospect, not a good look for him. And the bass tone....don't get me started on the Wal. I hate it.

I agree with you Steve, I didn't care for Geddy's sound with the Steinberger, then his bass tone sound became too (thin & wimpy) when he used the Wal. I'm sure the Wal has nice low end, it was probably the thin gauged strings and eq he was using.

Havng pre-ordered the UK version, I'm still waiting for this.

How does it sound? I've read some bad comments about the sound (particularly about Geddy's ESL bass tone!) in some reviews. I hope this is wrong!

I've also heard that - unfortunately - there are no easter eggs. Not even the bonuses from the laserdisc releases of these titles.

The last thing I've heard (sorry about all these) is that if you buy Replay x 3 from Best Buy, there are 4 extra tracks on the CD. Can anyone confirm this?

True. That is where I got it, and there are 4 extra tracks, it said so with a little sticker on the cover.

The sound is very good. I have had ESL on DVD for a few years now, a transfer off of the Laserdisc, and it sounds the same. It's not "remastered" or anything that I can tell, the sound doesn't sound different. It's a 1980's concert recording.

The concert books are pretty cool to have...easter eggs are usually not much to write home about. I am just happy to finally have these 3 on DVD. The Grace under Pressure one is better than I thought it would be.

Steve, according to the press releases, Alex Lifeson has definitely remixed the sound on all three titles.

In amongst the reviews on Amazon.com, there are several negative comments. Some have said that it is overcompressed and distorted (like many recent releases). In addition, several have said that Limelight on ESL is their 'Holy Grail' of bass tones, or at least it was until this remix. However, I am reassured by your opinion. If it sounds the same to you, these people must be exagerating the differences.

I have yet to play it at home thru the "Big System", I am going to do that today. I'll update my opinion after I do that. I heard it was remixed to 5.1 Surround Sound, but there is also the PCM Stereo Mix available, that's what I was listening to.

There is a significant difference in "Clank" between the PCM Stereo Mix and the 5.1 mix. I like the stereo mix better, truer to the original sound.

Started watching mine (in a drunken state) last night.

You know what keeps coming to mind during Exit Stage Left?! I keep looking for the old USA Network "Night Flight" logo!! They used to play ESL all the damn time...makes me feel young again.

And at the risk of pointing out the obvious & asking for something that will never happen - why, oh why did Mr. Lee ever put the Rick down.

Sigh....
