Does anyone know a source for 4001 truss rods?
I hate to admit this especially after reading John Hall's comments on twisting the nut right off a truss rod, but I did do that to a nice Midnight blue 78 4001 (before I found this column), she is sitting there in Ma. right now with no strings and one truss rod just tight enough to keep the neck straight. I looked around a bit and was told that Ric does not make them, and was advised to got to a macine shop and have them custom made. Is that the only option? It seems to me that there must be other people out there as stupid as me if John Hall has heard about it often enough to comment on it. So it follows that there must be someone out there making them if this happens even once in a while, and there are a lot of 4001's around.
You can just shorten the rod a bit and rethread it. An inch less won't make much difference . . . at least with a truss rod.
A fellow has submitted a rod to us for inspection, with the intent that he might supply these directly to the market. Unfortunately, I have some concerns about his first attempt but will make some suggestions soon to solve the issues. If he implements them, it might allow us to make a recommendation and send people his way.
