Best Non-Ric 12?

Post by jholcomb »

I have two Ric 12's, but I'm wanting to find a relatively inexpensive electric 12 string to take on the road when I'm with my son at his baseball tournaments. Any recommendations?

I hear plenty o' good about the Danelectros. Cheap, tank-like and nice sound, which I personally can't verify. The basses, of which I'm the owner of, a Longhorn RI, are super. For the money, the sound and playability are phenomenal!

Like Fran, I love my Danos, but my electric twelve string of choice is my Phantom Guitarworks (semi-hollow) Teardrop XII. My Ric 340/12 went bye bye.

I think I paid $750 for the Phantom... a Danelectro would be about half that.

Best of luck.

Noel:

I've been considering the Phantom Teardrop, but wondered how easy it was to play when sitting?

That Phantom looks sweet Noel.

I like my MIJ Fender Strat XII, I think mine's about '90. I think those can still be had for not much dough. Maybe give that shot.

John, it doesn't sit as well as a guitar with a lower horn, but it's not impossible to play seated. I just have to keep my left hand on the neck. Of course, it's much better to play it when standing. Like the old Vox XIIs, it's a trifle peghead heavy.

I took the plunge on a Danelectro Hodad 12. Always thought the Mosrite shape was cool, and they get good reviews on Harmony-Central. For 200 bucks used, I didn't think I'd get hurt too bad. I'll report in full when it arrives.

Cheers, John, and enjoy. A little late but I'll throw in on this... I have a Squier Venus 12 and a Dano 6/12 doubleneck. Both 12s are great but the 6 string Dano neck is pretty lousy.

Jason, I'm curious to know more about your Squire Venus 12. There's been one that I've had my eye on at my fave 2nd-hand music shop here in Osaka, Japan for a few months now:

He's asking about USD $500. Good deal? (Bearing in mind cool 12-strings are pretty scarce in Japan, unless you've got crazy money to drop on vintage gear.) And what do I need to know about Squires when buying? I've heard some were/are great, but the only ones I've ever played were pretty much garbage (Fender Squire Strats).

Apologies if I'm hijacking the thread...

Yes that sounds like a decent deal. I got mine four years ago for that price. It is in near mint condition. I just had it setup a few weeks ago and it plays great, but the truss rod is maxed out. The 12-saddle bridge is a very nice feature. I never ever see these guitars anywhere anymore, so I would grab it while you can. Guitar Den in Orlando, FL has one with changed tuners for $800 I think. That's where I bought mine!
