I recently picked up a 4004L ... and as many of you know I modifed it a little ...
http://www.3dentourage.com/4004L5.htm
it essentially still has the same character ...
The sleek molded body is nice ... I am surprised how good the humbucker pickups sound ... sort of p-bass like mid punch ... it records very nice ... I still prefer the 4001/4003 basses but I like the 4004 a lot ... it works good for classic rock and newer stuff like Creed ... my 4003s5 bass seems to have more sustain and more bite ... but it is nice to have tha 4004L as part of my stable of basses ...
I can get a good Geddy Lee sound out of this bass ... but for that Chris Squire sound I prefer the 4001/4003

I play with a pick, I pluck with my thumb, I pluck with my fingers, I hammer with my fingers, I slap with my thumb .... I use just about every method there is to play a bass ...
at first the spacing on a 4003s5 will feel cramped ... but I got used to it ... now a 4 string bass with normal spacing feels awkward to me ...
The spacing on my converted 4004L5 is a little wider than the 4003s5 ... the neck on a 4004 is a little wider and the bridge that I installed has a spacing that is 1/4" to 3/8" wider than a 4003s5 which makes fingering more comfortable
here I am fingering my 4003s5 ... I am really pulling on that B string ...
