4005 with 3 pick ups?

Post by 8mileshigh »

I'm just having a 4005 re-finished which is a bit of a mystery. It looks to have been originally fitted with 3 pick ups? Or more likely someone added a middle pick up and did quite a neat job? Who knows. Any ideas guys?

Nice mod job! (As opposed to the typical burn-a-hole-in-it-with-a-dull-Dremel!)

That's what I think Paul. I've not seen any mention in any book of 3 pick up models? But then again it's so neat - could it be factory?

Simon Mole has one, but he says it is a modification done by the previous owner

I don't think it came from the factory that way ... but I but it really improves the tone ...

That's sweet! That's exactly what I'd need in a 4005: a place to anchor my thumb, and the tone (that I would think) would be produced by a middle pickup.

And there's a very nice '75 4005 for sale a mile or so away from my house at the CME.

Hmmmmmmm!(scratches head)

I remember debating whether to buy that one Graham. It appeared with the very, very reasonable BIN a couple of years back.

I like the 3 p/up layout. If had been any colour apart from black I would have snagged it...

No clue if it's factory - certainly never seen or heard of one before. But I can tell you this - that third pickup will improve the 4005's tone by leaps and bounds. And be a good thumbrest for Jeff!

Would this make it a 4010?

Really nice one, Graham - what year? JG or BG?

Three p/u's on a 4005 would've been a great idea! ...but I really doubt any ever left the factory that way...

I would guess it's a late 60's. Although it has an XX jack plate - so I'm not sure. I've never bothered to check the pots. But the case looks like a late 60's as well.

Oh and it's JG John.
