What would you do?
I have an opportunity to purchase a lefty Mapleglo Ric bass 4001 for around a thousand. It is from the 70's and in terrific shape, almost mint. Here's the catch....the tuners on the headstock aren't Rickenbacker. They have been changed says the owner though the finish on the headstock is perfect. Looks like a close match though not stock. Would you pursue this guitar or let it go for not being a "true" Ric? Any suggestions are helpful. Thanks.

Normally a tuner change isn't a big deal. But look closely at the back of the headstock. If new holes were drilled, make sure they were properly drilled and that no cracks resulted. If the holes for the tuner posts were enlarged for those big-honkin' Schaller M4S tuners or Grover Titans, you may want to take that into consideration when you come up with your bid price.
While you're studying the neck, look for cracks near the nut where the fretboard is laminated to the neck from improper truss rod adjustments.
What year is it? If it is a '72 or early '73 with crushed-pearl inlays and checker binding then you want to jump on it immediately regardless of tuners.

Yes, that is right. Lots of Rics have changed tuners. My 82 4001 has Grover tuners just like this cool 4001S on eBay now. Take a look: http://cgi.ebay.com/RICKENBACKER-4003S-BASS-1983-4003-S-Nice-83-w-Case-NR_W0QQitemZ190060188530QQihZ009QQcategoryZ4713QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
