What would you do?

I have an opportunity to purchase a lefty Mapleglo Ric bass 4001 for around a thousand. It is from the 70's and in terrific shape, almost mint. Here's the catch....the tuners on the headstock aren't Rickenbacker. They have been changed says the owner though the finish on the headstock is perfect. Looks like a close match though not stock. Would you pursue this guitar or let it go for not being a "true" Ric? Any suggestions are helpful. Thanks.

If it is a legit deal, the rest of the bass is truly Rickenbacker and it really is in nice condition, go for it. You can always install Rickenbacker tuners after you have it.

I agree with Joey - if the neck and all check out as great and RIC, then go for it. Tuners are a small issue, unless the holes were enlarged.

Alot of the 70s basses got their tuners changed out. I'd say go for it.

It's probably a real Ric. I say gofer it. Tuner changeouts are no big deal. If you're really concerned about it being legit, just check for two truss rods.

Normally a tuner change isn't a big deal. But look closely at the back of the headstock. If new holes were drilled, make sure they were properly drilled and that no cracks resulted. If the holes for the tuner posts were enlarged for those big-honkin' Schaller M4S tuners or Grover Titans, you may want to take that into consideration when you come up with your bid price.
While you're studying the neck, look for cracks near the nut where the fretboard is laminated to the neck from improper truss rod adjustments.
What year is it? If it is a '72 or early '73 with crushed-pearl inlays and checker binding then you want to jump on it immediately regardless of tuners.

Sounds like a decent deal to me.

Those wavy Grovers are original on the 4001S. RIC used them in 4003s and 4001s around '81-'83.

Thanks! Did not know this. They must be replacement on my 82 4001 or are they stock as well?
