360/12 sting problem

Post by shackleton »

I have noticed that the octave string on the low E is not ringing all the time. I seam to be just muting it, instead of fretting the note. I don't seam to have this problem on any other string and I am using Ric standard strings. I was thinking about going to a smaller gauge sting to the low E so it would be closer the the octave. Has anyone had this problem and tried this? I have more strings but don't want to open a pack unless this will solve the problem. I noticed the low E has the largest difference between the two stings.
Got to start with one make it a 360/12.

Eric, measure the distance of both E's (11 and 12) from the string at the 1st fret to the fret itself. They should have about the same clearance. If they are the same and not too high up for comfortable fretting, You could try going to a .040 or a .039 low E to make them easier to fret together. I've been using .024 and .040 as 11th and 12th string gauges for many years without problems. My whole set runs from .009 to .040 with a bit off here and there to balance the tension throughout the neck. I have not had to re-set my 620/12's neck in over 10 years. Hope this helps.

Thanks. That is what I was thinking too. Problem is where do I get those sizes in compressed round wound?

Maybe I just need to lower the whole set of strings.

Eric, e-mail me off forum and I'll give you the rundown on the custom sets I make up for my 12's.
